I remember the first time I desperately needed leather in Hytale. My sword was about to break, and a new set of armor seemed like a distant dream. Scouring the landscape taught me one thing: knowing your hides is half the battle.
Leather is a linchpin for crafting better gear and upgrades. To get there, though, you need hides. And as of now, Hytale features three distinct types. This guide shows you where to find them.
From Zero to Hero: A Hunter’s Guide to Hytale Hides
In the real world, a master tailor can identify leather types just by touch. In Hytale, the principle is the same, except you’re trading your tailor’s shears for a sword. You’ll find three hide types: Light, Medium, and Heavy. Each comes from different animals roaming the zones. Knowing which animal yields which hide can save you precious time.
Light Hide
Light Leather starts with Light Hide. Turn it into Light Leather for those essential early-game weapons and armor. So, what animals do you need to hunt?

- Antelopes
- Boar
- Cows
- Chickens
- Deer
- Pigs
- Horned Rabbits (the bigger ones)
Most of these animals are relatively harmless, making them easy targets for early-game resource gathering.
Medium Hide
For mid-tier crafting, you’re going to need Medium Leather. The source? Animals that put up a bit more of a fight.
- Wolves
- Lions
Heavy Hide
Think of Heavy Hide as the reinforced steel of Hytale crafting. It’s the toughest, most durable leather you can get early on.

- Bears
- Mosshorn
These creatures don’t go down without a fight, so come prepared. Your threadbare starting gear simply won’t cut it.
How do I increase my yield of hides in Hytale?
The amount of hides you get per animal is fixed. To ramp up your yield, the play is simply to hunt more. Try exploring different biomes and zones. Each houses unique animal populations.
Turning Hide into Leather
Raw hide is like crude oil: it needs refining. In Hytale, that means using a Tanning Rack. While the basic Tanning Rack will work for Light Leather, you’ll need upgrades for Medium and Heavy varieties. It’s like upgrading from a home coffee machine to a full-blown espresso setup. Consider exploring Creative mode, too. It has more types of Hides and Leather, though they’re not yet available in standard Exploration mode.
Is there a way to automate leather production in Hytale?
As of the current early access build, there’s no native automation system for leather production. However, the beauty of Hytale is in its community and modding capabilities. Keep an eye out for community-created mods that introduce automation features.
What is the best armor to craft with leather?
The “best” armor depends on your play style and the challenges you’re facing. Light Leather armor offers early-game protection without hindering movement. Medium Leather strikes a balance, while Heavy Leather provides the most defense at the cost of agility. Consider experimenting to find the right fit.
Now that you know where to find every hide and turn it into leather, the question is: will you become a master hunter, or a legendary craftsman?
