Complete Quartz Compass Malfunction — Styx: Blades of Greed

I landed on a viney ledge and the compass stuttered like a liar. Jasper tossed me a grappling hook and the jungle answered with roots and spores. For a long beat I realized this quest wasn’t a detour — it was a gatekeeper.

I ran this section on PlayStation 5 and Steam; I’ll tell you exactly where to go, which buttons to press (L1 on PlayStation / LB on Xbox; mouse + E on PC), and the small choices that save time and saves your loud, fragile save file.

Styx Blades of Greed Quartz Compass Malfunction walkthrough

On my first pass the direct route to the compass marker was blocked by a living root wall.

Think of the whole quest as three short jobs you have to finish in order:

  • Find another route to the strange compass signal
  • Collect five seeds and place them to open the vegetal gate
  • Follow the marker, handle soldiers, and meet Wren

How do I use the grappling hook in Styx Blades of Greed?

The grappling hook is the tool that turns walls into roads. Press L1 / LB (or the PC key you bound for the hook) to fire and hold for momentum, then release to swing. Time the release to land on the next platform — sloppy timing throws you at insects or abyss.

Practical tips from my run on PS5: swing from the right side of the giant tree to avoid a hidden pit, and keep the hook ready when you enter cave thresholds. The jungle is a coiled spring — rush it and it snaps back at you.

Where are the seeds to open the vegetal gate?

You need five seeds total. If you followed the cutscene, Jasper gives you the hook and you pick up the first seed inside the initial cavern. I found the second seed in the tree room to the right of that cavern.

The third seed sits on the floor just before the vegetal gate; approach the puds and press Y / Triangle to place three seeds at once. Then head left, swing with the hook into the next room and grab the fourth seed off the counter. For the final seed, don’t use the hook — jump across three platforms to a ledge, pass a short grapple room, then look down and latch onto a branch. There’s a small insect group guarding the last seed inside that cavern.

Quick reminder: place seeds near the puds — the game expects you to put three there, then return the other two. Y / Triangle on console, E on PC.

Can I stealth past the soldiers or should I fight?

Short answer: you can slip past many encounters, but sometimes a quick kill clears the path faster. I watched two men chat near the marker, skirted them, and crept into a red-lit room to dispatch two soldiers. After that, three more waited past the exit. If you kill only the ones that block your marker path, you keep heat low.

If you raise too much attention the cavern fight becomes a slog; follow the marker to the waterfall, take the left route, hook down into the lower cavern and you’ll meet Wren. After the scripted countdown the quest completes.

I tested small variations on PlayStation and PC and the mechanics hold: seeds, hook, stealth or single-target kills. The compass can be a traitor in your pocket, baiting you into noisy routes — trust the marker, not your impulse to sprint.

Which path will you choose the next time the compass lies to you?
