Unlock Catalyst 2 for Barrow-Dyad in Destiny 2: Step-by-Step Guide

Destiny 2‘s Barrow-Dyad Exotic submachine gun has quickly become a formidable asset in the game. With the upcoming release of additional Exotic Catalysts, its capabilities are set to expand even further. The second Catalyst, while simple to acquire, may require some time and effort from Guardians.

In Destiny 2, many Exotic weapons feature unique Exotic Catalysts that enhance their functionality. Craftable Exotics also come with a selection of these Catalysts. However, it’s essential to remember that players must actively earn the right to utilize these Catalysts, as the requirements are not always clearly outlined.

After Guardians complete the Derealize Exotic mission and obtain the Barrow-Dyad, they can begin pursuing the first and subsequent Catalysts. Though the second Catalyst’s requirements are not particularly complex, the time necessary to meet them may vary greatly depending on individual play styles in Destiny 2.

How to Earn the Coalescence of Sorrow Catalyst

To embark on the quest for the second Barrow-Dyad Catalyst, players first need to unlock it. This begins by completing the initial mission of Episode: Heresy‘s Act II. Players must then locate three secrets in The Nether: one in the Trenchway, another in the Mausoleum, and a final one in the Hall of Souls.

These secrets are primarily hidden mini-events that may already have been completed during your exploration of The Nether.

  • Guide “The Ravenous” Thrall to Hive worms in the Hall of Souls; it will evolve into an Acolyte and later into a Knight. Defeat the Knight to loot the chest that appears.
  • Light three braziers in the Trenchway. One braziers is against the wall leading out of the zone (near the large divide and invisible platforms), and the other two are located on the round platform opposite the first. Once all three are lit, an Ogre will appear for Guardians to defeat. Loot the chest that spawns.
  • Eliminate four Blights on tentacles in the Mausoleum. Each Blight will summon a Taken Centurion, and upon defeating the last, a chest will materialize.

Obtaining Another Osseous Spine

Each hidden objective rewards a Coalescence of Sorrow. Once Guardians collect all three, they should navigate to a hidden room in the Trenchway during any run of The Nether. This room is accessible by revealing platforms using your Ghost (where you find the Essence of Desire chest). There’s an interactable panel on the left side of the room that usually states players are “not worthy.” However, Guardians can now activate this panel to open a Taken portal leading to an alcove containing two chests. One of these holds the Heavy Osseous Spine, allowing players to start the “A Hammer’s Path” Quest.

It’s worth noting that some players have reported inconsistent results when trying to access the portal. While it’s speculated that achieving max rank in Path of Ambition could be a requirement, my personal experience showed that I was Reputation Rank 6 when I opened it. Once the portal is opened, Fireteam members can also enter and obtain the Heavy Osseous Spine, even if they do not already possess the Barrow-Dyad.

To complete the first step of the A Hammer’s Path Quest, Guardians must achieve milestones related to the Path of Ambition. There are three milestones to complete in the Quest, with the final one requiring Rank 12 or max Rank. Thus, players focused on earning the Catalyst should prioritize farming Path of Ambition reputation as efficiently as possible.

As the Path of Ambition has only recently become available, pushing through the ranks may take some time. Once players reach the necessary rank, they’ll need to tackle a run of The Nether on Expert difficulty while utilizing specific weapons:

  • The Barrow-Dyad submachine gun
  • Any shotgun
  • Any glaive
  • Any sword

Including the Barrow-Dyad in the loadout is logical, but melee-centric gear can make Expert runs in The Nether especially challenging. Players can adopt different strategies, particularly if they have a Fireteam. Combining Exotic Class glaives and Legendary swords with a well-rolled Ergo Sum could add an interesting dynamic. Upon completing this task, players will unlock the Hatchling Perk for the Barrow-Dyad.

The Catalyst must then be applied to the weapon via The Enclave in Savathun’s Throne World. Once completed, the Hatchling will spawn Threadlings when players achieve a precision kill or secure three kills within three seconds, with the effect refreshable every three seconds. This synergy can lead to exciting gameplay, especially when paired with the Artifact’s Unraveling Orbs and Horde Shuttle options.
