The Giant Sapsucker is an imposing seven-foot-tall Woodpecker, fiercely territorial and primarily located on the Adamance map. She usually spawns near her nest, which can also appear on Vow and March. Keep an eye out for her companions: the Tulip Snakes and the Baboons from the Hawk tribe.

What Does the Giant Sapsucker Do?

This massive bird typically protects her three eggs while sitting on her nest. You can find her nest on the other side of a rickety bridge east of the Main Entrance in Adamance. The Sapsucker has two core behaviors: she either stays near her nest or pecks at a nearby tree while keeping a vigilant eye on her surroundings. If you venture too close, she will confront you aggressively, but this isn’t the main source of her threat.

Pressing further into her territory will provoke her into a charge, where she screams and attacks relentlessly with her powerful pecking. Attempting to flee from this might be futile, making it exceedingly difficult to survive an encounter. Striking her when she’s on alert will lead to a fierce retaliation. Engaging her solo can quickly end with you becoming a meal for her chicks.

How to Handle the Giant Sapsucker

The best strategy? Simply avoid her. So long as you stay away from the nest, you won’t find yourself in danger. You can maneuver within her vicinity and sneak towards the nest, but only when she isn’t watching. Her vision is sharp, making her difficult to deceive. Attempting to provoke the Sapsucker using her natural enemies may not yield favorable results.

Should you decide to aggravate her to steal her eggs, proceed with caution. Eggs can fetch between €30 and €60 each, but you can only carry one at a time. Attempting to approach the nest with her nearby demands teamwork, as the odds of success are bleak when she’s in protective mode. The risk of failure is high, and the team will need to work together if any egg retrieval is to succeed.

Using a Stun Grenade while keeping TZP-Inhalant handy during your escape will optimize your strategy. Engaging the Sapsucker directly could be a more extreme option if you intend to access her nest. Upon discovering that an egg is missing, she’ll swiftly initiate a counterattack. Remember, the moment you drop or hold the egg for more than five seconds, it’s likely to hatch, drawing her ire. Attempt any egg retrieval only at the end of a round, when retreating to orbit.
