MindsEye, scheduled for release on June 10, recently showcased an extensive gameplay overview during the IOI Showcase. Developed by Build a Rocket Boy under the guidance of Leslie Benzies, the event provided insights into the game’s combat systems, user interface, driving mechanics, and expansive open world. While this showcase aims to quell rumors about the game’s authenticity, it leaves room for skepticism about its overall appeal.
In essence, MindsEye blends the over-the-shoulder combat familiar to Grand Theft Auto fans with hacking elements reminiscent of Watch Dogs, all while incorporating the core narrative elements of Cyberpunk 2077. However, this cocktail of AAA gaming conventions results in a title that some might describe as lacking distinct personality. The firearms available in its GTA-style weapon wheel seem to lack significant impact, making combat feel rather generic and uninspired.
The vehicles, though eye-catching, exhibit a ‘floaty’ feel similar to what was seen in Watch Dogs 2, detracting from the driving experience. While the open world may initially dazzle players, a closer inspection reveals it could be perceived as somewhat hollow.
Despite multiple viewings of its pre-release footage, I still struggle to pinpoint the game’s overall vibe. Is it a fusion of Cyberpunk and GTA? A dystopian third-person shooter? Or something more linear and simplistic?
Perhaps my critique may seem overly stringent, but I encourage you to examine the gameplay for yourself. However, it’s challenging to view the title as a certain success, particularly with the recent resignation of Build a Rocket Boy’s CFO and Chief Legal Officer just a week before launch—an unsettling sign, to say the least.
