Disney Dreamlight Valley is currently facing a wave of melancholy during Joy’s Mood Swings quest. While Joy embodies happiness and energy, her recent game of Capture the Sun has inadvertently left some villagers feeling disheartened. Let’s dive into their experiences and see what we can do to lift their spirits.
1. Starting the Mood Swings Quest
To kick off the Mood Swings quest, you need to reach level four friendship with Joy and complete Sadness’ Storm’s A-Brewin! mission. Once you meet these requirements, speak with Joy, who will share the sad news about Donald, Goofy, Merlin, and Vanellope, all suffering from unexpected gloom.
2. Check in on the Capture the Sun Players

Your next mission is to check on the Capture the Sun game players. Talk to Donald, Goofy, Merlin, and Vanellope to discover they feel unusually tired and sad, and they have no idea why. This mystery thickens, adding to the quest’s intrigue.
3. Break Some of Donald’s Furniture
After discussing your findings with Joy and Sadness, it’s time to help Donald Duck. Enter his house and inform him about your unorthodox approach: breaking some of his furniture. Specifically, you’ll need to smash his couch, table, and bookshelf to release some of his pent-up emotions.

All three items are located inside his house: the table next to his bed, the couch by the door, and the bookshelf beside him. Unfortunately, this act of destruction doesn’t resolve Donald’s sadness. So, you and Joy decide to assist Merlin next in hopes of better outcomes.
4. Help Merlin by Cleaning the Dreamlight Library
Your aim now is to lift Merlin’s spirits. Upon entering his Dreamlight Library, you’ll notice a mess of potions and spiderwebs everywhere. Before you chat with him, you’ll need to straighten up the place.

Potions are mostly out in the open with one hidden behind some books. The spiderwebs can be found in clear view, with two on the right side and one behind Merlin’s desk. You won’t need any special tools, but be sure to return the potions to the book pile near the entrance of the library.
5. Cook a Joyful Meal for Vanellope
Even though Merlin appreciates your help, he still isn’t feeling better. Joy suggests that it’s time to help Vanellope, using a cheerful plan to whip up a Joyful Meal that may reignite her sweet tooth.
After finding the Joyful Meal’s recipe, gather these ingredients:
- Wheat
- Raspberries
- Banana
- Blueberry

You can find these items early in the game after unlocking the Peaceful Meadow, Dazzle Beach, and the Forest of Valor. Purchase wheat seeds from Goofy’s stall or gather the other fruits from trees and bushes in these biomes. With all four ingredients collected, head to a stovetop or to Chez Remy’s kitchen to prepare the dish before bringing it to Vanellope.
6. Craft a Shiny New Fishing Rod for Goofy
Despite your efforts with the Joyful Meal, Vanellope’s mood remains low. Now it’s time to focus on Goofy by crafting him a shiny new fishing rod.
You’ll need the following materials:
- Softwood (10)
- Fiber (4)
- Iron Ingot (2)
- Tinkering Parts

Softwood is easy to find around trees in various biomes. You’ll require one seaweed to make fiber, while you can spot iron ingots and ore while exploring the Forest of Valor and beyond. Don’t forget to create extra iron ingots as you need two for the tinkering parts.
Once you’ve gathered everything, head to the workbench and navigate to Functional Items to create the fishing rod. After returning to Goofy, you’ll be prompted to fish in the large pond at Peaceful Meadow. Look for orange fishing spots to catch plush bear thread. Discuss this new find with Merlin and Joy to conclude the Mood Swings quest and prepare for Sadness’s next mission.
