The True Meaning Behind Mahito – The Most Hated Villain in Jujutsu Kaisen

Up until the Shibuya Incident arc, the cursed spirit group of Jogo, Hanami, Dagon, and Mahito assume the role of the main antagonists in “Jujutsu Kaisen”. These are all special-grade curses born from humanity’s primal fears of natural disasters.

However, Mahito stands apart from his group in “Jujutsu Kaisen”. Instead of representing a natural disaster, Mahito was born from humanity’s fear of each other. This explains why he looks the most human compared to the other curses and has a terrifying ability tied to his origin.

Aside from his origins, Mahito is also the youngest among the group and is considered the one with the most potential. This fact, though previously unnoticed, has now gained attention thanks to a Reddit post. A user asked why Mahito is only recently born, given that humans’ fear of each other is as old as any other primal fear.

The answer to this question in “Jujutsu Kaisen” is simple yet profound. As some users pointed out in the comments, this showcases the intelligence of the creator, Gege Akutami.

Particularly, humanity’s fear of itself reflects the state of society, and over time, people have become more aware of the atrocities humans can commit against one another. This growing awareness led to the birth of this fear, and thus, the creation of Mahito.

One user wrote, “The idea Gege’s supposedly working on is that humanity has, especially in the modern era, transitioned from largely protecting each other to largely threatening each other. We fear each other in ways we never used to, and the negative emotions from that built up in modern society to add a new natural disaster, human beings..’”

“As we grew capable of mass destruction, the cursed spirit representing our fears of each other manifested into a spirit that better represents that potential for pure mass destruction”, the same user also added.

Clearly, this is an intriguing approach to a character as hated as Mahito. But it also shows how Gege Akutami cleverly weaves such subtle and profound details into creating his characters. This will undoubtedly encourage readers to delve deeper into the characters of “Jujutsu Kaisen”.

On the other hand, “Jujutsu Kaisen” will conclude with Chapter 271 on September 29, 2024.
