It has been revealed that an anime series adaptation of Asano Inio’s manga, “Dead Dead Demon’s Dededede Destruction,” which was first animated in a film, will be produced with a different ending from the movie. The 18-episode anime series will be included in a complete box set limited to the “GAGA★ONLINE STORE,” releasing on December 4, 2024. Along with this announcement, a teaser video packed with highlights has also been released.
“Dead Dead Demon’s Dededede Destruction,” often referred to as “Dedededede,” was serialized in “Weekly Big Comic Spirits” starting in 2014 and concluded in 2024 with a total of 12 volumes. The story follows two girls navigating their dystopian teenage lives in a world where a gigantic spaceship, colloquially known as the “mother ship,” suddenly invades Tokyo’s skies, and the initially despairing situation gradually merges into their daily lives.
After the first chapter premiered in theaters in March 2024, followed by the second chapter in May, the series received widespread acclaim for its excellent foreshadowing and intricately woven narrative structure. Viewers were particularly moved by the “absolute” friendship between Kadode (voiced by Ikuta Rira) and Ontan (voiced by Ano). The second chapter of the movie featured a sequence created by the original author, Asano, which closed with a shocking ending completely different from the original story. The newly announced anime series will depict another timeline 16 years later with 18 episodes, delighting fans of the original work.
The released teaser video showcases various highlights from the anime series, including an episode featuring the encounter between Oran’s brother, Hiroshi (voiced by Suwabe Junichi), and a high school girl, Yumina, who is preparing for university entrance exams. It also includes the story of journalist Kate interviewing a mother and daughter living in a smoke-filled area, as well as intense battles involving robots rampaging through the devastated world after the “8/32” mother ship explosion—scenes that were not depicted in the movie but were popular in the original manga.
Additionally, a special “All-Night Screening Event” for the anime series (all 18 episodes) will be held in November as the first unveiling of the series. Details regarding the schedule and guests will be announced on the official website, so fans should look forward to further updates.
The “Dead Dead Demon’s Dededede Destruction” Blu-ray Complete Box (6 discs) will be released as a luxurious 3-disc set, including the main discs for both the first and second chapters of the movie, along with a special features disc containing various event footage. The first edition will come with a limited edition sticker featuring newly drawn illustrations.
Furthermore, the Blu-ray Collector’s Edition (3 discs) will be packaged with a limited production Blu-ray Complete Box (6 discs) that includes the anime series (all 18 episodes) as well. This set will feature a special outer case and sticker using newly drawn illustrations. Additionally, a special edition will be available for the first production run, including an acrylic board and four types of clear files. Be sure to check out both versions!
