September 9th is “Danshoku Day” (Men’s Love Day). According to yin-yang philosophy, men are categorized under “yang,” and this day is notable for the repetition of the odd number “9,” which represents yang energy.
Works depicting romantic relationships between men are referred to as BL (Boys’ Love), a genre that has garnered a large fanbase. BL-themed anime are particularly popular, with numerous titles being broadcast, released, or streamed over the years.
To celebrate, Anime! Anime! conducted its annual reader survey titled “What Is Your Favorite BL Anime?” This year’s survey only included officially categorized BL titles. The survey, conducted between August 31 and September 3, received responses from 55 participants, with the gender ratio being about 10% male and 90% female, with a majority being younger fans under the age of 19.
