Plot Summary

Satsuki is a sixth-grade girl who moves to the countryside with her younger sister Mei and their father to help their mother, who is in the hospital, recover in a clean environment. Their new home is an old house near a large camphor tree.

Upon arrival, Mei discovers small, black, ghost-like creatures called “Soot Sprites” hiding in the house. After learning from a neighbor that these creatures are known as “Susuwatari,” Satsuki and Mei are thrilled by their mysterious and wonderful encounter.

One day, while playing in the yard, Mei encounters two strange creatures. She follows them and tumbles to the base of the camphor tree, where she meets a giant creature named Totoro. When Satsuki hears about this, she tries to meet Totoro herself, but the hole at the base of the tree where Mei entered has disappeared…
