Drama Chat: Exploring the Charm of Fluff in Odes

This Drama Chat is an ode to fluff. And my younger self would balk just to hear that. “Fluff?! You’re watching fluff when there are deep and dark art films and a trove of Tarkovsky films to watch and rewatch?!” What my younger self didn’t know, though, is that sometimes the world itself can get a bit too deep and dark. And that instead of losing yourself in stories that express that, sometimes it’s better to move in the opposing direction: enjoy something silly. It very well might lighten your heart a bit.

I have learned to appreciate the power of a story that’s light and comforting. Sometimes it comes in the shape of a favorite children’s book (Wrinkle In Time anyone?). Other times it’s a drama whose premise I know is a bit ridiculous, but still I can’t refuse the smile it puts on my face. It paints a picture of a world that always has a happy ending, where true love is hiding around every corner, and where every wound gets healed over with time, care, and possibly a Band-Aid affixed by a loving neighborhood oppa.

What about you? How do you feel about K-drama fluff? Do you find it comforting and restful, or do your reach for more dark and realistic stories?
