Whether you’re a new fan, or a veteran drama watcher with decades under your belt, chances are we’ve all experience the same thing: that one drama that wrecked us. Okay, maybe it’s more than one, but I’d wager the list of dramas that laid waste to your emotions is smaller than the ones that didn’t.
For me, that drama will always be Answer Me 1988. I can’t rewatch it, I can’t revisit it, and I can’t even think about it without getting a weird feeling in the pit of my stomach.
Part of this is because I live-watched it as a distraction when my family was going through a crisis; part of it is because of how real all of the characters felt, and how attached I became to them. But of course the biggest reason is the utter devastation I felt over the conclusion of the Jungpal love line. Good God, that hurt. Even so many years later, it still feels like it just happened, and like someone punched me in the stomach and then walked away without even looking back after I collapsed. Pain aside, my hat is off to writing that can evoke such strong and long-lasting emotions.
