Team Dramabeans: What We’re Watching – Missvictrix, Quirkycase, Daebak, Grits, Solstices

So, what are we all watching this week?

What kept you reaching for more (or agonizing when there was no more), and what made you want to throw your remote through the screen? Time to weigh in…

Currently weecapping: Our Beloved Summer, Bulgasal: Immortal Souls

Angel’s Last Mission: Love: Arg, I’m in such a drama slump right now. I feel like I’m in a holding pattern while waiting for all the new shows to drop in a few weeks’ time… so in the meantime I started Angel, since it’s been on my I-want-to-watch-this-but-I-don’t-know-why list for a long time. I am only two episodes in, and while it’s kinda ridiculous, I am looking forward to the rest of the plot, and seeing our heroine change for the better. My other primary through is that L is just distractingly handsome.

Bulgasal: Immortal Souls: Sneaking in here to gush for a moment, climb on the highest thing around (my kitchen table?) and shout how much I love this drama. I love the emotions, the characters, the angst, and all the deeply buried messages that are all for the finding. It’s slow and tangly and emotional and bloody and confusing and Lee Jin-wook is my OG oppa for a reason.

Dr. Park’s Clinic: With Ra Mi-ran and Lee Seo-jin, I couldn’t pass this one up. Unfortunately, the first episode didn’t do anything for me. I’m not sure if the humor just wasn’t my style or what, but I barely even chuckled. It’s like it should’ve been funny but wasn’t? I haven’t decided whether to bother with the second episode or not.

Our Beloved Summer: I figured something was going on with Ji-woong’s mom. Honestly, I wish we’d focused more on their relationship than Ji-woong’s angst over Yeon-su. On the couple front, I’m glad Woong and Yeon-su are trying not to repeat their mistakes, although they still have work to do on the communication front (especially Yeon-su). I feel like Woong is doing more of the heavy lifting in the relationship at this point, so I hope Yeon-su steps it up too.

Currently weecapping: Moonshine, Ghost Doctor

Our Beloved Summer: I spent all of episode 13 rolling my eyes over Ji-woong’s unnecessary angst over an unreciprocated crush, and during episode 14, I was constantly worrying Yeon-su’s grandmother was going to die. Like, I legit held my breath when Yeon-su checked in on sleeping Grandma and she didn’t initially move. I’m hoping next week we get to see a sample of the documentary because I really want to know what direction Ji-woong took with his “story.”

Through the Darkness: I was a fan of Netflix’s Mindhunters, which is about the FBI’s development of the profiling techniques being adopted by the characters in this drama, so my personal headcanon is that these two shows are in the same universe. I’m enjoying the dark but realistic take on serial killers, but I found the cop beating the suspect into a false confession extremely uncomfortable to watch. However, it did make it extremely satisfying when our lead proved him wrong. I feel like this would be a better show to binge watch once it’s completed, so part of me wants to set it aside for now. On the other hand…I really, really like it…

What’s Wrong with Secretary Kim: One episode left! We’ll be finishing this drama up this weekend! It’s been a fun ride, and I have to say I think I enjoyed this more my second time watching it. Not sure if it was the company, my mood, or what, but this drama really is a ball of fluffy fun.

The King: Eternal Monarch: We’re moving quickly and are already about half-way through! One thing I noticed during this rewatch that I didn’t realize the first time — probably because I watched it as it was airing and there was time between episodes — is how quickly our OTP falls in love. If you combine all the hours they have spent in the same room together, it would probably equate to a week, and that honestly might be stretching it. I think the reason I give this drama such a hard time — despite having a huge soft spot for it — is because I know it could have been so, so, sooooo much better.

Currently recapping: Bad and Crazy, Through the Darkness

Bulgasal: Immortal Souls: Do-yoon! T___T I guess he finally got a hug from Hwal, but at what cost! I bawled like a baby, okay. He’s a genuinely good kid who cares deeply for others — he swallowed his guilt and went against his moral compass for his hyung’s sake, and he confessed the truth to Sang-eon even though it would’ve been in his best interests not to. He couldn’t even lie to Eul-tae at the end! My heart breaks for him, and I really wish he survives. He deserves a warm and loving family, and Hwal deserves a second chance with his son. Also, with every episode Sang-eon turns into even more of a Candy, and it’s grating on my nerves. Stop with the overly naive doe eyes and outdated damsel-in-distress cliches! Her exuberance feels mismatched and tonally disjointed with the rest of the show. I’ve found myself missing the child actress who played Sang-yeon, because she had a gravitas to her that I sorely miss in our grown-up twin. I’m also really not feeling the shoehorned-in romantic moments between Hwal and Sang-eon. Give us more past-life flashbacks and mythological lore, please! Anything for more Eul-tae on my screen. He has chemistry with just about every character, but I think I most enjoy watching him with Do-yoon. The mix of exasperation, condescension, attachment, and fondness all coalescing and conflicting whenever he interacts with Do-yoon is such a treat to watch. I love that you can never truly tell whether Eul-tae’s words are truth or lie, because watching him feels like the good kind of rollercoaster ride.
