Team Dramabeans: Our Weekly Watchlist feat. Stroopwafel, Missvictrix, and Quirky Case

So, what are we all watching this week?

What kept you reaching for more (or agonizing when there was no more), and what made you want to throw your remote through the screen? Time to weigh in…

Space Sweepers: I never miss a Kim Tae-ri project so I had to watch as soon as this was available on Netflix. The film was very ambitious, but very uneven. I had trouble staying interested in what was happening and didn’t manage to get invested in the characters. It felt like there was a lot of time spent setting up the very vast world within the movie and that the character building was just smushed in here and there as afterthoughts. I did like the ending, but Space Sweepers didn’t leave me wanting more. Maybe I’m just not a space person?

Currently weecapping: Mr. Queen, True Beauty, and Sunbae, Don’t Put on That Lipstick

Mr. Queen: I loved watching Jang So-yong go head-to-head with their enemies and work with Cheoljong on his grand plan. I’m really not sure where we’re going in terms of whether Bong-hwan will stay as So-yong or return to his own body, but this latest doozy of a development makes things even more complicated. I’m curious to see how So-yong will deal with this life-changing event and how it’ll impact everything.

Run On: I’m so glad I decided to pick this one up. I loved the focus on characters and relationships and how chill it all was. We weren’t overloaded with angst or drawn-out conflicts, and the core relationship between Mi-joo and Seon-gyum was refreshingly simple and natural. I was pleasantly surprised that Mi-joo’s orphan status didn’t merit a tragic backstory and focus on all her paaain. There were occasional mentions of her background, but that’s it – she wasn’t entirely defined by her childhood trauma or struggles. Another thing I appreciated was the varied friendships and the way they all supported each other, even if begrudgingly in the case of Mi-joo and Dan-ah. I hope this year will bring more introspective dramas like this one.
