EPISODE 10 RECAP

Spring, 2008

Ji-won burst into Hee-sung’s workshop to share exciting news, “I passed…I’m a police officer now.” Throwing her arms around Hee-sung’s neck, Ji-won confessed that becoming a cop had been her childhood dream. As rain hit the window, Hee-sung hugged her tightly.

In the present, tears spring from Ji-won’s eyes as she confesses, “I miss you.” Hee-sung can only answer, “Yes,” as Sang-chul watches him closely.

After Hee-sung hangs up, Sang-chul extends his hand but it’s ignored when Hee-sung sits down on the couch to discuss business. The bartender brings over a laptop and Sang-chul shows Hee-sung exactly what it is he sells.

Ji-won checks her phone for Hee-sung’s current location just when he calls to ask where to meet her. She chooses the park across the street from the station and runs there to wait for him.

After changing the burned out lightbulb, Moo-jin shows Hae-soo some drops that should help her sleep and the floor lamp that he brought. Hae-soo demands to know, “Why are you doing this after leaving when I needed you the most?” In a flashback, the teenage Hae-soo threw Moo-jin’s necklace to the ground and ran away in tears.

Angry, Hae-soo walks out and Moo-jin remembers that he searched through the tall grass until he found the broken necklace. Moo-jin joins Hae-soo outside where she announces that there’s nothing that he can do for her anymore.

Moo-jin argues that he’s the one person who understands Hae-soo because of the fact the he ran away back then, which is what she’s doing now. Fighting back tears, Hae-soo reminds Moo-jin that she killed the foreman and let her brother take the blame, and now, “The one who he cares for the most thinks Do Hyun-soo is a ruthless murderer.”

Ready to tell the truth, Hae-soo shouts at Moo-jin not to stop her and runs inside. Moo-jin shouts through the closed door, “Why would you think there’s nothing I can do for you?” As Hae-soo cries, Moo-jin offers to be there for her in her darkest moments, “It’s not because I want things to be like they were. I just hate seeing you coping with everything alone.”

While waiting for Hee-sung, Ji-won gets a call from Hae-soo, who wants her to know that Hyun-soo didn’t kill the village foreman. Hae-soo promises that after she finishes something, she’ll tell Ji-won what really happened that day.

Hee-sung runs up right after Hae-soo’s call and jokes that he has two minutes to spare. Ji-won gazes into Hee-sung’s eyes and thinks, “I was all you had. And even right now, I’m all you have.

Ji-won checks to see if he’s hurt and when Hee-sung tries to discuss why he couldn’t talk earlier, she interrupts him, “I didn’t mean it when I told you that I wanted to break up with you. I also didn’t mean it when I told you that I’ve fallen out of love.” Hee-sung replies, “I know,” but Ji-won knows better.

Throwing her arms around Hee-sung’s neck, Ji-won tells him, “I wish we could switch bodies just for one day so you could feel how much I love you.” Hee-sung senses that something’s going on but Ji-won only hugs him harder.

Ho-joon calls Jae-sub from the hospital with the news that Jung-soon made it through surgery but warns that her condition is still serious. As soon as they hang up, the desk phone rings with a call from Oh Bok-ja, the old woman who had a photo of Do Hyun-soo. Holding Moo-jin’s recorder, Oh Bok-ja tells Jae-sub that she found something unusual.

Ji-won tells Hee-sung all about her bad day on the walk back to the station. Afraid to face her team, Ji-won suggests that she should quit so they can raise Eun-ha in the countryside. Looking at Ji-won’s ID, Hee-sung remembers how happy she was the first day that she wore it. Ji-won protests that being a cop isn’t that fun anymore and Hee-sung tells her, “You’re a bit weird today.”

At home, Hee-sung strokes Eun-ha’s hair as she sleeps. When he tries to pull away, he realizes that Eun-ha fell asleep clutching his sleeve. Hee-sung disentangles himself and whispers, “I’m sorry. Daddy needs to go now.”

At midnight, Sang-chul calls Hee-sung on a burner phone, “The transaction will start tomorrow at midnight…bring $100,000 to my office.” After he hangs up, Hee-sung remembers what he saw on Sang-chul’s laptop — a live feed of three people in a small room, their hands and feet bound by zip ties (In-seo is one of them!).

Hee-sung asked for the kid and Sang-chul wrote down the number 10,000,000. Hee-sung made it 100,000,000 (won) if Sang-chul provided the name and a photo of Min-seok’s accomplice. Unable to resist, Sang-chul handed Hee-sung a burner phone and explained that if any of his terms weren’t met, the prisoners would be killed.

In the Baek living room, the real Hee-sung looks at the family portrait after learning that Hyun-soo took over his identity. Hee-sung doesn’t understand where he fits in but promises his father, “I’ll do whatever you tell me to do.” But Hee-sung’s face crumples and when begins to cry, he suggests, “Can’t we ask him to give me… My name back?” Just then, Hyun-soo (who will now just be known as Hyun-soo) calls Dr. Baek.

Hyun-soo needs $100,000 in cash, explaining, “I found someone who knows about the accomplice.” Still unaware that the real Hee-sung has regained consciousness, Hyun-soo reminds Dr. Baek, “You don’t want the name Do Hyun-soo being talked about anymore either.” Dr. Baek instructs Hyun-soo to meet him at the hospital the following day and hangs up.

When his wife asks what Hyun-soo wanted, Dr. Baek pretends it was nothing. Later, as Dr. Baek settles his son back in bed, Hee-sung begs again to meet Hyun-soo. Dr. Baek won’t allow it, “He isn’t that easy. If he finds out that you woke up, he’ll think you’re an obstacle.” Suddenly afraid, Hee-sung asks what he plans to do and Dr. Baek answers, “We just have to pray that luck will be on our side.”

In the morning, Hyun-soo finds Ji-won asleep on top of the covers. When he throws the blanket over her, Hyun-soo sees that Ji-won’s wedding ring is back on her finger. In the bathroom, Hyun-soo’s smiling practice doesn’t go so well. His facial muscles won’t cooperate and the pain in his chest returns, forcing him to drop to the floor.

A shaky Hyun-soo walks out of the bathroom just as Ji-won is about to run out the door. When he protests that she hardly got any sleep, Ji-won explains, “Hwang Jung-soon just died.”

Hyun-soo smoothes Ji-won’s messy hair and wonders, “Why aren’t you asking me…why I answered the phone like that.” Ji-won answers, “Tell me when you want to tell me.” As soon as Ji-won is gone, Hyun-soo removes his wedding ring.

Captain Yoon holds a press conference to answer questions about the reinvestigation. Reporter Park Jin-kyu immediately asks about the sting operation that resulted in Jung-soon’s death.

At the same time, Woo-chul and his team build a profile of the deceased witness. Ji-won reports that Hwang Jung-soon transferred money every month to her mother’s nursing home. Jae-sub tells them that Jung-soon visited the market in Jaerim-dong, the neighborhood where Hyun-soo was when Ji-won called him, and Ho-joon reports that no one has claimed her body for a funeral.

Woo-chul inquires about Jae-sub’s trip to Gakyeongri and before Ji-won can press him for details, her desk phone rings. A distorted voice claims to have information on the Yeonju City case and when Ji-won asks for the caller’s identity, he answers, “This is Do Hyun-soo.” Sitting above a busy plaza, Hyun-soo wears a black baseball cap and glasses with earbuds in his ear.

When Ji-won can’t talk, Jae-sub takes the phone. He’s convinced it’s a prank call until Hyun-soo informs Jae-sub that he can help catch the accomplice.

While Jae-sub takes a minute to talk to the team, Hyun-soo recalls Sang-chul’s terms, “You are not to carry any communications devices…Once the money has been checked, you’ll pick up your package at the designated location.” Hyun-soo agreed to the deal after Sang-chul promised a photo and the name of the accomplice.

Now recording Hyun-soo’s call, Woo-chul asks for permission to place him on speaker. Hyun-soo stipulates that what he tells the team isn’t to be shared with anyone else before informing them that he made a deal with the human trafficker who sold people to Do Min-seok and his accomplice.

Hyun-soo wants to help the police catch the trafficker but only if they agree to protect his identity. Jae-sub still doesn’t believe the caller is Hyun-soo but Ji-won and Woo-chul accept the terms. Satisfied, Hyun-soo gives the team Sang-chul’s name and warns that if he learns that the police are involved, he’ll kill his prisoners and Hyun-soo.

After the call, Ji-won finds a quiet spot to phone her husband and suggest that they should go out to dinner. Hyun-soo informs Ji-won that he won’t be home at all because he has a funeral to attend. He’s surprised when Ji-won begs him not to go but insists that he must. Ji-won is about to hang up when Hyun-soo confesses, “I want to be someone decent enough for you.” Unable to hold back her tears, Ji-won promises to call again around 10 p.m. and hangs up.

Thanks to his mother and the help of a wheelchair, Hee-sung sits outside for the first time in years. The housekeeper brings out a blanket and using a notepad, she offers Hee-sung a cup of hot tea. As soon as she’s gone, Hee-sung asks how much she knows and his mother explains that they hired someone who can’t read lips plus she signed a confidentiality agreement.

His mother asks who Hee-sung was on his way to meet the night of his accident and he answers, “A woman.” Thinking of that day, Hee-sung believes, “…if that had happened, all our lives would’ve turned out differently.”

At the office, Ms. Kang presses Moo-jin for his exclusive interview with Do Hae-soo. Moo-jin insists there isn’t one but Ms. Kang isn’t convinced. Moo-jin makes a hasty exit when Hyun-soo texts, “Let’s meet. It’s important.”

During a session with a hypnotherapist, Hae-soo revisits her father’s funeral. Hae-soo sees the accomplice writing his phone number on her arm and notices that his fingernails are unusually short. Hae-soo also remembers that a green silicone bracelet with a distinctive logo was on his wrist.

When Hae-soo recalls that the accomplice stared at her face as if to memorize it, she’s overcome by fear. The therapist immediately wakes Hae-soo, who exclaims, “…he’s going to come kill me.” Agitated, Hae-soo walks out just as her phone vibrates with a call from Moo-jin.

At the station, the team delves into Sang-chul’s background. In 1997, Sang-chul was paroled from prison to volunteer at the same children’s psychiatric clinic where Hyun-soo was treated, providing a link between Do Min-seok and Sang-chul.

CCTV footage from the neighborhood surrounding Sang-chul’s employment agency shows that Jung-soon was there just before she met Ji-won. Despite the fact that Hyun-soo’s tip turned out to be legitimate, Jae-sub tries to convince the team to that they should still find him and arrest him.

As Moo-jin drives Hae-soo home, she complains that she can’t have a therapist who answers her phone without permission. When Moo-jin explains that the therapist only answered her phone because she thought they were friends, Hae-soo changes his listing from “Moo-jin” to “Reporter Kim”. Hee. With that done, Hae-soo asks why Hyun-soo wants to see them but Moo-jin doesn’t know.

Ji-won listens in alarm as her colleagues devise a plan to catch Hyun-soo and use Hae-soo’s DNA to confirm his identity. When an excited Jae-sub asks Ji-won what she thinks, she’s speechless.

Moo-jin and Hae-soo are shocked when Hyun-soo confesses that he used his real name to give the police a tip. Moo-jin warns that if Sang-chul suspects that he was betrayed, Hyun-soo will pay. Hyun-soo tries to explain that if Ji-won was in his position, she would never abandon Sang-chul’s prisoners.

Hyun-soo asks for Moo-jin’s help and when Hae-soo offers her help as well, he reminds her that he can’t trust her, citing her almost confession to Ji-won as proof. Moo-jin objects to Hyun-soo’s harshness but Hae-soo admits that he’s right. They’re interrupted when Hyun-soo’s burner phone gets a call from Ji-won’s number.

During another conversation with Ji-won’s team, Hyun-soo informs them that he’s to deliver a cash payment to Sang-chul. Should anything go wrong, Sang-chul will call off the deal and the police lose their chance to catch the traffickers.

Hyun-soo plans to handle that transaction by himself but Woo-chul argues it’s too dangerous. Hyun-soo refuses Woo-chul’s offer of protection, “I will not come in contact with the police for any reason.” When Ji-won entreats, “Please trust us,” Jae-sub takes notice.

In a flashback to the team’s earlier meeting, Jae-sub asked for Ji-won’s help to catch Hyun-soo but she refused, “Do Hyun-soo put himself in danger to…help save the victims who were abducted. If we must betray that trust to capture him…I will drop out of this investigation.” In the end, Hyun-soo tells the team, “You just save the people who were abducted. I will take care of myself.”

When Sang-chul visits the whisky bar, the bartender confirms that Jung-sook is dead. Sang-chul can’t believe that she fell into the cops’ trap and when the bartender chuckles that Jung-sook was an idiot, Sang-chul reminds him, “One of our men died. ”

Sang-chul suggests taking a break after Hyun-soo’s deal and orders the bartender to load the remaining prisoners onto a boat. One of his men returns with an envelope that contains photos of the accomplice and looking at them, Sang-chul comments, “He never comes around anymore.”

At the hospital, Hyun-soo inspects a bag filled with money and when Dr. Baek worries that things will get worse instead of better, Hyun-soo promises, “I’ll resolve it.” Dr. Baek offer Hyun-soo 10 times that amount if he’ll disappear without a trace and promises to take care of his family.

Hyun-soo doesn’t want to entrust his family to Dr. Baek and when asked what he thinks of the doctor, he answers that they’re very much alike, “You don’t care what you must do to obtain your goal.” Dr. Baek replies, “How lucky is it for people like us to have a common goal,” and when Hyun-soo leaves, Dr. Baek makes a point of saying, “Goodbye.”

Woo-chul asks Captain Yoon for backup as his team readies their weapons. Jae-sub takes the opportunity to tell Ji-won, “I’m truly glad that you’re on this team.” Referring to her refusal to betray Hyun-soo, he adds, “…today, you reminded me of that.”

Ho-joon teases that Ji-won must want to hurl because Jae-sub’s compliment was so cringy. When Jae-sub gets a call informing him that the data on Moo-jin’s recorder was successfully retrieved, Ji-won escapes to the roof.

As Hyun-soo moves the money to another bag, his burner phone gets another call from Ji-won’s number. This time, only Ji-won is on the call and she explains that Nam Soon-kil’s wife had some of Hun-soo’s things. Admitting she listened to the tape in his cassette player, Ji-won asks whose voice was on the recording. She’s surprised when Hyun-soo confesses that it was his mother, made just before her disappearance in 1997. After she was reported missing, the police confiscated all of his mother’s belongings and Hyun-soo was afraid they would take the tape if they ever learned about it.

Ji-won reasons that Hyun-soo must have loved his mother very much but he reminds her that he’s incapable of feeling emotions and explains, “I don’t want to lie to you.” Before hanging up, Ji-won begs, “Please stay safe today.” As soon as the call is over, Hyun-soo remembers that Ji-won promised to call him at 10 p.m. and when he checks his watch, he realizes that she just kept her word.

Ji-won calls the therapist who told her that the recording triggered Hyun-soo’s violent tendencies. Ji-won demands to know why the therapist never considered that the recording was connected to Hyun-soo’s mother, “You were the only one that could’ve helped him back then…You should’ve known!”

Jae-sub picks up Mo-jin’s recorder and the tech asks why everyone is using him. When Jae-sub asks who else used his services, the tech tells him the female detective he works with was a recent customer.

Woo-chul briefs the backup team while Jae-sub listens to Moo-jin’s recorder on the drive back to the station. Jae-sub pulls over abruptly when he hears Moo-jin ask, “…how did Do Hyun-soo become Baek Hee-sung?”

Jae-sub listens to Hyun-soo explain, “Ji-won knows nothing about me. She doesn’t know my past, and she doesn’t know I’m abnormal.” Jae-sub remembers all the times that Ji-won steered their investigation away from Hyun-soo and realizes that she must know her husband’s true identity.

On the drive to Hyun-soo’s meeting, Moo-jin asks why he has to be so harsh with Hae-soo. Hyun-soo explains that Hae-soo would have insisted on helping but he couldn’t allow it because of the danger. When Moo-jin asks, “Then what about me,” Hyun-soo reminds him that he agreed to help.

Moo-jin can’t understand why he did that and Hyun-soo explains, “Because I asked you…in front of my sister.” Moo-jin realizes that he was manipulated and Hyun-soo admits, “I’ve always done that. And I think I always will.”

After an online search for green silicone wristbands, Hae-soo remembers seeing the Ilshin University Hospital logo on the one the accomplice wore to her father’s funeral.

Jae-sub barges into the briefing room and orders Ji-won, “Come outside.” When she hesitates, he grabs her wrist, “Come outside right now. You don’t deserve to be here.” After Jae-sub drags Ji-won from the room, he confronts her, “You knew everything, didn’t you?”

Ji-won’s hand begins to tremble and tears fill her eyes when Jae-sub adds, “How could you…you manipulated us to do things your way. You lied to us.”

As Hyun-soo drives, he recalls Ji-won’s plea, “Mr. Do. Please stay safe today.”

COMMENTS

The closer that Hee-sung gets to fully becoming Do Hyun-soo, his chest pains get worse. Yet he’s forced to take on his real identity as Do Hyun-soo to catch the accomplice and get the police off of his trail. Unfortunately, Hyun-soo is still wanted in the murder of the village foreman and even though Ji-won now knows that he’s innocent, the rest of the police force is still after him. Add to that Dr. Baek’s desire to move Hyun-soo out of the way so that his son can retake his place in the family and it’s looking as if Hyun-soo’s problems are only multiplying.

For some time now, Ji-won has been struggling with the question that Jae-sub posed while he was in the hospital, is she a wife or a cop? Angry that she’d been lied to and convinced that Hyun-soo was a killer, Ji-won went into full cop mode. Now that Ji-won knows that Hyun-soo has lived his entire life burdened by undeserved labels and that he’s not really a killer, as his wife, she’s desperate to protect him and her wedding ring goes back where it belongs. It’s ironic that that’s when Hyun-soo takes off his wedding ring so he can return to being known as Do Hyun-soo. These two are breaking my heart.

Hae-soo is doing what she can to help Hyun-soo and after undergoing hypnotherapy, she’s recalled some important details that lead right to Ilshin University Hospital and Dr. Baek. According to Sang-chul, the accomplice is definitely a man who hasn’t been to the whisky bar in a very long time. Does that mean the real Hee-sung could be a serious candidate since he’s been out of commission for so long? That would be weird because the real Hee-sung seems to be a very sensitive soul, but maybe that’s because he just woke up from his coma. What about Dr. Baek, who had no qualms about killing Kyung-chul and keeps a suspicious burner phone hidden in his desk? Something’s going on with the Baek family and I’d like to know once and for all who’s good and who’s bad.

Now that Jae-sub has stumbled upon the truth about Ji-won’s husband, Ji-won is about to experience what Hyun-soo has been through. She chose not to tell anyone the truth about Hyun-soo just as he kept the truth about his identity from her. Ji-won didn’t want to lie to her colleagues in much the same way that Hyun-soo doesn’t like lying to her, but they’re both in such impossibly complicated situations. Jae-sub is really angry and disappointed with Ji-won, just as she was when she learned that Hee-sung was really Do Hyun-soo, and hopefully he’ll soften towards her when he understands what she’s been going through. But first, I’m afraid the fallout of being a cop and knowing that her husband was Do Hyun-soo is going to be a real trial.

Everyone is doing their own investigating at this point but that can’t continue. Sometime soon, I hope to see the entire gang come together to share what they know so that they can solve the serial murder cases once and for all. Hopefully when that happens, Do Hyun-soo can finally clear his name. Only then he can return to being a devoted husband and father, which is all that he’s ever wanted.
