Japanese Audience Votes: K-Pop Acts to Exclude from NHK Kōhaku Uta Gassen

Two K-pop groups were highlighted in the results.

“NHK Kōhaku Uta Gassen”, also known as “NHK Red And White Song Battle”, is a renowned annual television event in Japan where popular artists, divided into two teams, compete in performances. In recent years, the show’s inclusion of K-pop artists reflects the genre’s increasing popularity in Japan.

In 2024, notable K-pop groups such as SEVENTEEN, Stray Kids, NewJeans and LE SSERAFIM took the stage. Additionally, groups like TWICE’s MiSaMo and NiziU, comprised of Japanese members but managed by K-pop agencies, were also featured.

The poll was based on the performers from 2024, and two K-pop acts landed in the top five of their respective teams.

NiziU, having appeared on the show four times, was placed 4th on the red team. One viewer remarked, “They’re no longer trending. I lost interest in them a long time ago.” Another voter viewed them as a Korean group and felt they should not be part of this large Japanese event.

Stray Kids also ranked 4th, but on the white team. In contrast to NiziU’s multiple appearances, Stray Kids made their debut on the show only last year. Some comments from viewers included, “I don’t know them at all and have never listened to their songs. Why are they on the show?” and “The show holds historical significance in Japan. It should only feature Japanese artists.”

It will be intriguing to see which K-pop groups, if any, are invited to participate in this year’s 75th edition of the show.
