BLACKPINK’s Director Faces Backlash for New Girl Group: Netizens’ Criticism

BLACKPINK’s Director Faces Backlash for New Girl Group: Netizens’ Criticism

On December 3, it was announced that girl group “cosmosy” will be making their debut at the end of 2024. This is a 4-member girl group composed entirely of Japanese members, including a’mei, de_hana, himesha, and kamión, and embracing the concept of “COSMOS of Youth”.

Notably, “cosmosy” is said to be a project that bring together global creators that were behind various K-pop stars, including the creative director that lead BLACKPINK’s debut and worked on various other stars like LE SSERAFIM, Red Velvet, IVE, IU, aespa, and TXT.

The aforementioned director has also shared about the “cosmosy” on their Instagram, confirming their participation in the formation of the group.

However, despite “cosmosy” being formed by BLACKPINK’s creative director, K-netizens’ reactions towards the group was cold, mostly due to the members’ Japanese nationality. These netizens compare the girl group to XG (another Japanese girl group with K-pop influences) and accused them of trying to get clout from K-pop and BLACKPINK.

Below are some comments from netizens:

  • If they are all Japanese, this is J-pop, so why are they using BLACKPINK’s name?
  • So this is a Japanese group like XG. Seriously, stop trying to get clout from K-pop
  • Leave BLACKPINK alone
  • It seems that all idol groups are trying to take on the K-pop label for popular…
  • The concept seems to be a mix of aespa, ILLIT, and NewJeans
  • Look at this Japanese group… they are trying to take advantage of BLACKPINK’s brand
