Cha Eun-woo’s Vogue Pictorial Sparks Debate on Korean Online Forum

A post titled “차은우 게시물 댓글 반응 왜이럼” (Why Are the Comments on Cha Eun-woo’s Post Like This?) on the popular Korean online forum Nate Pann has sparked intense discussion, highlighting the backlash Cha Eun-woo faced for his recent Instagram post.

On December 7, Cha Eun-woo uploaded a new Vogue pictorial to his Instagram account, showcasing his signature visuals. However, the timing of the post—amidst ongoing political turmoil in South Korea—quickly drew criticism from some netizens, who questioned the appropriateness of posting such content during a national crisis.

Instagram Backlash

Comments under Cha Eun-woo’s Instagram post reflected growing frustrations:

  • “In a time when the country is in chaos, you upload this? Do you even have any awareness?”
  • “Can’t you at least read the room?”
  • “Go to the National Assembly instead, seriously.”
  • “You know what state Korea is in right now, but you still felt the need to post this?”
  • “Does the country being in turmoil mean nothing to you? At the very least, make a statement like your other colleagues.”

These comments suggested that some netizens expected celebrities to acknowledge or respond to the political situation rather than carry on with their promotional activities as usual.

Nate Pann’s Reaction

The backlash on Instagram quickly spilled over to Nate Pann, where users debated the validity of the criticism. Many defended Cha Eun-woo, expressing frustration with what they called “unreasonable expectations” and “hypocritical outrage.”

  • “The same people who claim to oppose martial law are now infringing on others’ freedoms. Hypocrisy at its finest.”
  • “Cha Eun-woo is just doing his job. Meanwhile, these keyboard warriors are pretending to care about the country while attacking a celebrity from their rooms.”
  • “This ‘inappropriate timing’ outrage feels like a throwback to the hyper-sensitive ‘this situation’ criticism during the Moon Jae-in era. I hated it then, and I still hate it now.”
  • “Posting on Instagram is literally part of his job. Should he stop working because of the political climate? Are these people skipping work themselves because of the situation?”

Some users also criticized the inconsistency in public outrage:

  • “Back during Park Geun-hye’s presidency, people thought impeaching her would fix everything. Then we got Moon Jae-in, and now they think impeaching Yoon Suk-yeol will magically solve things too.”
  • “The comments make it sound like Cha Eun-woo posted something in support of martial law. He just posted a photo!”

The Nate Pann post has now gathered approximately 130,000 views and countless comments.
