Sung Dong-il and Kim Mi-sook to Join Lady Ok’s Family

Sung Dong-il, Kim Mi-sook

The production behind JTBC’s historical drama The Story of Lady Ok has announced veteran heavyweights Sung Dong-il (Han River Police) and Kim Mi-sook (The Whirlwind) will be joining our leads Im Ji-yeon (The Killing Vote) and Choo Young-woo (Oasis) as they swindle the public, practice law, and fall in love.

The plot follows the story of Lady Ok Tae-young (Im Ji-yeon), a talented and compassionate attorney in Joseon. She’s someone who has it all — looks, noble connections (her father-in-law is the magistrate), and talent — she’s the envy of the town. Except one of those things is not like the others.

As it turns out, Tae-young is not the highborn lady everyone thinks she is: she’s a runaway slave. So she’s been careful not to let people get too close. That includes people like her adoring and very eligible brother-in-law Kim Jae-won (Hierarchy), and her protege Yeonwoo (Dog Knows Everything), with a secret of her own.

But that goal becomes complicated once she runs into the traveling storyteller Cheon Seung-hwi (Choo Young-woo). At first sight, he falls in love with her and loudly declares his undying loyalty, which might not be something you want when you’re a) pretending to be a widower of a husband you never married and b) trying to keep a low dating profile in case people discover point A.

Should her secret get out, Tae-young could lose everything. Like her newfound family, for example. Sung Dong-il plays Tae-young’s father-in-law, the magistrate, who believed in her before anyone else, and Kim Mi-sook plays the warm matriarch of the Ok clan. While we don’t yet know if they’re in on her secret, it would be devastating to their reputation if word got out. In Joseon, status is everything, and Tae-young is not about to let her life get snatched away.

Written by Park Ji-sook (Uncle) and directed by Jin Hyuk (Sisyphus: The Myth), JTBC’s The Story of Lady Ok is set to premiere on November 30th.
