Netflix’s Mr. Plankton has announced their arrival on dramaland’s seascape, diving us into a rom-com adventure with Woo Do-hwan (Bloodhounds) and Lee Yumi (Strong Girl Nam-soon) in the first poster and teaser.
In a story about not their first but last love, the teaser begins with some pretty sad news as Hae Jo (Woo Do-hwan) receives a terminal diagnosis and Jo Jae-mi (Lee Yumi) learns that she has premature menopause. It is of course worst for our hero. But it’s still not a great situation for the engaged Jae-mi who is supposed to be marrying into a traditional clan family, where duty calls for bearing sons to carry on the lineage.
Feeling sympathetic, Hae Jo passes Jae-mi his umbrella with nary a word of explanation and then surprises her again by showing up on the very day of her wedding. Having embarked on what might be his last ever trip, Hae Jo offers his hand to help Jae-mi run away and join him in his travel. Sorry Oh Jung-se (Sweet Home 3), I… er… don’t know how to say this but… I think your bride has… uhm… left.
We thus cut to our pair on this unexpected road trip, squabbling, fighting, and running across the country back roads in the sequence. With ingredients like these, we can certainly hope for a deliciously fun rom-com, though we are reminded of the bittersweet element as the teaser ends on Hae Jo’s wistful remark.
Helmed by PD Hong Jong-chan (Link: Eat Love Kill, Dear My Friends) with scripts by Jo Yong (It’s Okay to Not Be Okay), Netflix’s Mr. Plankton will be released for streaming on November 8.
