Promo has begun for JTBC’s upcoming ensemble comedy A Virtuous Business. In the released teaser and script reading stills, we’re introduced to our housewife Kim So-yeon (Tale of the Nine-Tailed 1938) and her friends Kim Sun-young (Queen of Divorce), Kim Sung-ryung (Love to Hate You), and Lee Se-hee (Bad Prosecutor) as they take life into their own hands and start selling adult products door-to-door.
The year is 1992, a pre-Victoria Secret era. We open our housewife Han Jung-sook (Kim So-yeon) as she sends her son off to school so she can go sell her wares. It’s the nineties, so the go-to marketing strategy is house group demonstrations a la tupperware and Mary Kay. As she pours her visitors tea and starts her sales pitch, all seems completely normal. That is, until her colleague wheels out a rack of lingerie to the gaping mouths of her guests. Nope, that’s not a necklace, Jung-sook explains, that’s a thong.
Despite the shock of their audience, the salesladies press on, confidently declaring over a montage of product demonstrations, “Women want to express their sexuality too. It’s our right.”
As homemakers with children, each of our foursome turned to door-to-door selling as a way to make ends meet. But with sex-talk being rare and successful working women even rarer, they may have an uphill battle ahead of them before they can make any sales. Thankfully, what they do have in spades is firey determination, and based on the way Jung-sook smiles innocently while holding up a sex toy in one scene and ferociously screams into the air in another, these ladies will to whatever it takes to make it in this business.
