The newest teaser for SBS’s action-fantasy The Judge from Hell portrays its titular heroine Park Shin-hye (Doctor Slump) in a different light. In lieu of the pained screams, glowing red eyes, and burning gates to hell in the first teaser, the second leans towards a brighter atmosphere with a slight comedic bent.
Judge Kang Bit-na (Park Shin-hye) wears a red-wine-colored suit that pops against the white backdrop and stares straight into the camera with a smile plastered across her face. As if addressing school children, she tells the audience to follow along with her: “Justice is dead.” Well, those are some somber words to hear while facing death.
Her expression turns cold, and Bit-na haughtily informs us that this is why she will send us to hell personally. The text on screen calls her “wicked but lovely” which are not two words I would necessarily associate together. However, I love a good contrast, so I’m interested to see how the show will pull off this blend of genres.
Also in the cast is Kim Jae-young (Love in Contract) who plays violent crimes detective Han Da-on. A passionate man with a personality that can even warm a devil’s heart, Da-on meets Bit-na while she occupies a judge’s body in the human world. Will he actually be able to change a devil, or will she prove to him that the living world is no different from hell?
Besides our two leads, Kim Ah-young (Miss Night and Day) joins as demoted devil Lee Ah-rong, and Kim In-kwon (Parasyte: The Grey) plays Bit-na’s assistant devil Gu Man-do, making the main cast three demonic beings to one human man.
Directed by filmmaker Park Jin-pyo (Brave Citizen, Love Forecast) with scripts penned by Jo Yi-soo, SBS’s The Judge from Hell is slated for fourteen episodes and premieres on September 21 in the Friday-Saturday slot.
