The promo campaign has finally set sail for MBC’s upcoming black comedy and thriller, which has been rechristened to Bittersweet Hell from Our House. Starring Kim Hee-sun (Remarriage & Desires), Lee Hye-young (Big Bet), Kim Nam-hee (Chicken Nugget), and Chansung (Bora! Deborah), we first meet our cast in the script reading stills while I sadly mourn my ruined plans for more 2PM jokes.
At the center of our story is the well-respected family psychologist and celebrity personality Noh Young-won (Kim Hee-sun). But one day the gentle Young-won starts to receive threats from an unknown blackmailer, jeopardizing her loving family and hard-earned success.
This leads Young-won to team up with her prickly mother-in-law Hong Sa-kang (Lee Hye-young), who happens to have a bit of know-how about these scenarios as a popular mystery-thriller novelist. There’s also nothing that Sa-kang wouldn’t do when it comes to protecting her son – and Young-won’s husband – Choi Jae-jin (Kim Nam-hee).
The apple doesn’t fall far from the tree, though, and the renowned plastic surgeon Jae-jin is dotingly devoted to both his mom Sa-kang and wife Young-won – as well as their son Choi Do-hyun played by DKZ’s Jaechan (Semantic Error). Rounding out their close-knit family, the group also includes Young-won’s man-child younger brother Noh Young-min (Chansung).
In supportive roles, noodle restaurant owner Ahn Gil-kang (Tale of the Nine Tailed 1938) is always ready and able to help Sa-kang with whatever she needs. Do-hyun, meanwhile, is getting school assistance from the bright but secretive tutor Jung Geon-joo (The Secret Romantic Guesthouse).
The long cast lineup also includes Shin So-yool (SF8), Yeonwoo (Numbers), Kwon Hae-hyo (Wedding Impossible), and Kim Sun-kyung (Unpredictable Family) among others.
Slated to premiere in the weekend slot on May 24, production for MBC’s Bittersweet Hell has scripts by Nam Ji-yeon (So I Married an Anti-fan), with PD Lee Do-hyun (Doctor Lawyer, She Knows Everything) and PD Wie Deuk-kyu co-directing.
