The first poster and teaser announcement have dropped for Netflix’s new suspense-thriller and black comedy The 8 Show. The drama sets a bizarre trap for our cast of (you guessed it) eight, led by Ryu Joon-yeol (Human Disqualification), Chun Woo-hee (Delightfully Deceitful), and Park Jung-min (Hellbound).
Adapted from the the hit webtoons Money Game and Pie Game by Bae Jin-soo, the drama assembles a curious group as our story’s show contestants, enticed by the simple lure of selling their time for money. In an intriguing mix of styles, with flavors of arthouse, theatre, and 1920s silent films, the teaser gives us the run down of the game at hand as each character is locked signed into their rooms.
Once they’re behind the curtain, the show must go on – come what may – and we as the audience can surmise that there’s no such thing as easy money without any strings. Indeed, the captions forebode a grisly tale by the description, “Irresistible but Brutal.” That added with the liberal use of red in the teaser (not to mention, this is Netflix) is something to consider for the fainthearted (i.e., me, but I’ll try to steel myself for at least one episode).
In this recent set of promos, we also get a peek at others in the ensemble cast, which includes Lee Yeol-eum (Nevertheless), Park Hae-joon (I Haven’t Done My Best Yet), and Lee Joo-young (Bargain), in addition to Moon Jung-hee (Times), and Bae Sung-woo (Live).
Production for the 8-episode series has filmmaker Han Jae-rim (Emergency Declaration, The King) both writing and directing — and making his drama debut. The curtains open for Netflix’s The 8 Show on May 17 next month.
