The first promos have dropped for Netflix’s new mystery-melo The Trunk, uniting Seo Hyun-jin (Why Her) with Gong Yoo (The Silent Sea) in arranged matrimony — until the one-year contract do them part.
It’s a situation that requires everyone’s informed consent, but when Noh In-ji (Seo Hyun-jin) rolls up with the titular trunk in hand, the air surrounding Han Jung-won’s (Gong Yoo) austere abode is haunted with unease. There’s much unsaid that we’re seeing in the visuals of each scene, emphasizing the contrast between all the mismatching elements and forcing me to stew in my own impatience, wanting to know what the heck is going on.
Eom Ji-won (Cold Blooded Intern) presides over the all-important ceremony, smiling at our not-so-happy couple in an ornately decorated but empty hall. For In-ji, this is all routine having already been “married” four times through her work with the NM company and Jung-won is now her husband number five.
But what’s even more curious is Jung-won’s side of the story in this strange scenario because his ex-wife Jung Yoon-ha (Big Bet) is the who put him up to it. She calls it both a punishment and a vacation that she’s giving Jung-won – whatever that means – and In-ji seems to look at her with scorn.
The final sequence then leaves us with more questions as the teaser ends, with In-ji’s trunk becoming central to the story’s mystery, somehow thrown into a lake before it’s fortunately (?) discovered.
Based on a popular novel by the same title, Netflix’s The Trunk will be releasing next month on November 29 with production led by PD Kim Kyu-tae (Our Blues, Live) and writer Park Eun-young (Hwarang).
