A new video teaser has been released for Netflix’s upcoming horror fantasy Hellbound, the latest project by Train to Busan director Yeon Sang-ho.
Based on a popular webtoon called Hell, which Director Yeon wrote himself, the drama is about a group of mysterious creatures who suddenly appear on Earth. These “demons” seem to be targeting particular humans (people who are said to be sentenced to hell) and it causes widespread panic. Taking advantage of the chaos that ensues, a revived religious sect led by Yoo Ah-in (Chicago Typewriter) grows in influence.
Yoo’s sect causes trouble for broadcast journalist Park Jung-min (Entourage), lawyer Kim Hyun-joo (Undercover), and police officer Yang Ik-joon (Bad Guys: City of Evil) who are trying to investigate what’s really happening. Complicating matters, Park’s wife Won Jin-ah (Sunbae, Don’t Put on that Lipstick) is hiding something that is related to the ongoing turmoil.

The teaser begins with the camera moving through Seoul’s landscape as we hear Yoo Ah-in preaching in voice-over. We transition to a busy coffee shop where we see one person who doesn’t seem to notice his companions. Instead, he is intently watching a video of Yoo Ah-in’s sermon on his laptop. As Yoo talks about prophecies and how some people know exactly when they’re going to die, we jump to another table where a man sits alone. The man looks distressed, clutching his cellphone, and his hands shake as the camera zooms in on the date and time. As the clock ticks 1:20, we suddenly hear the sound of heavy footsteps thudding closer.
We then cut to three massive, smoky creatures crashing in through the glass walls. The man makes a run for it, and the creatures chase him down the streets. Finally catching up to him, the man falls to the ground, and the three creatures circle around him. In the closing shot, we see what remains of the man’s body afterwards.
Production for the drama will be led by the webtoon’s original creators: film director Yeon Sang-ho (Train to Busan) and illustrator Choi Kyu-seok (Awl). The scripts were co-written by both Yeon and Choi.
Notably, Hellbound will be premiering its first episodes at the Toronto International Film Festival in just a few weeks, closely followed by a showing at the Busan International Film Festival in October. The drama will be released on Netflix thereafter.
