Retro human melodrama Youth of May has released a preview of the first episode featuring Lee Do-hyun (Sweet Home) and Go Min-shi (Sweet Home). The drama is set in 1980, which was a period of civil unrest and mass pro-democracy protests in South Korea. It’s against this backdrop that Lee Do-hyun falls in love with Go Min-shi.
In the video, as Go Min-shi runs into Lee Do-hyun, a brief introduction of his character, Hwang Hee-tae, is made. We hear a voiceover that exclaims, “Hwang Hee-tae, the first ranked medical student at Seoul National University?” In the next scene, he waves like an idiot to Go Min-shi as a taxi passes by.
Lee Do-hyun witnesses someone angrily grabbing Go Min-shi by her collar at her workplace, accusing her of being an aggressive bird. In the voiceover, Lee Do-hyun admits to Go Min-shi: “To tell you the truth, it’s not the first time I’ve seen you, Miss Myung-hee.” He remembers the time he first saw her. She took off her scarf with determined focus (perhaps to administer first aid to someone having an emergency on the streets).
In the present, Lee Do-hyun continues to tell her: “You’re a special person, definitely. I wanted to see you again, but didn’t know I’d get to see you here. We must be compatible…?” Cherry blossom petals fall around them, as copy says: “Like flowers bloom during a soft spring.”
Go Min-shi surprises Lee Do-hyun, and she laughs at his cute reaction. They’re shown dating, and he tells her that when he meets her, he feels like they laugh together several years worth of laughs he’d held in. Scoffingly, she says he must say that to all the girls he’s met with. Facing her, he tells her that she’s the first one, and text appears onscreen: “We thought it would only be beautiful.”
Suddenly the music turns sad as the mention of marriage is made. An acquaintance asks Go Min-shi whether she likes Lee Do-hyun. It looks like he passes them by as he says in his voiceover, “Miss Myung-hee, please tell me what’s in your heart. If you do that, I’ll make things simple for you.” However, she’s unwilling to take that leap. Go Min-shi tells Lee Do-hyun, “Let’s just end it here. Let’s just keep this as a good memory.”
KBS Monday-Tuesday drama Youth in May, written by Lee Kang and co-directed by Song Min-yeob and Lee Dae-kyung, will begin airing on May 3.
