Premiere Watch: Run On and Sweet Home – Top New Shows to Stream

More dramas and new genres on the way! This week we have two very different premieres — a light and pretty romance drama with an aesthetic I’d like to hop right into, and a dark and scary horror drama with an aesthetic out of my deepest nightmares. Take your pick, or heck — pick both! There’s no shortage of new dramas this December, that’s for sure.

Run On

Time slot: Wednesday & Thursday
Broadcaster: JTBC
Genre: Romance
Episode count: 16

Reasons to watch: With some pretty teasers and dreamy vibes to get us excited, it’s finally time for Run On to premiere! I’m hoping for thoughtful depth, strong characters, and a well-written script — all of which are more than enough to make the relationship between a retired runner and translator go from snooze alert, to a deep, insightful, and catch-your-breath sort of romance story. The drama stars Im Shi-wan and Shin Se-kyung as the main couple, and Kang Tae-oh and Sooyoung in the second lead slots. If Run On can capture the sweet emotions and aesthetic of More Than Friends (JTBC’s most recent romance drama), and add a little more for us to chew on, I know I’ll be a happy camper.

Sweet Home

Time slot: Friday
Broadcaster: Netflix
Genre: Horror
Episode count: 10

Reasons to watch: Netflix is back with their latest original offering after the wonderful weirdness of The School Nurse Files. There’s nothing cute or quirky about Sweet Home, though. Instead, it’s a full-on survival story of the horror/gore genre. We follow a group of humans who are desperate to hold onto their humanity as the people around them turn into horrifying monsters. How far are they willing to go to remain human? Where is the line between human and monster? What I’ve seen of this drama makes me think it’s a little too much creepy violence and gore for my taste, but the cast is so good! Lee Jin-wook, Lee Shi-young, Song Kang, and Lee Do-hyun. If those four names aren’t enough to make you do a double-take, I don’t know what is. Oh wait, maybe the fact that this director is responsible for some other dramas you might have heard of — you know, little dramas like Goblin, Descended from the Sun, and Mr. Sunshine?
