New True Beauty teaser reveals high school romance and mishaps

A new video teaser has been released for tvN’s upcoming True Beauty, featuring the main trio: Moon Ga-young (Find Me in Your Memory), Cha Eun-woo (Rookie Historian Gu Hae-ryung) and Hwang In-yub (Eighteen Again).

Moon Ga-young plays the central character, Joo-kyung, a bright but insecure high school student whose main struggle is not thinking she’s beautiful. As a result, she becomes reliant on cosmetics to make herself look prettier and hides her natural appearance from others. But her secret becomes known to Cha Eun-woo who eventually ends up sharing his own insecurities with Moon as well. As their relationship blossoms, they encourage one another to find confidence and love themselves as they are.

As with most rom-coms though, there’s another student with his eyes set on Moon Ga-young and that’s Hwang In-yub. While Cha Eun-woo comes across as cold and aloof, Hwang is more assertive and tough. The ensuing love triangle between the three characters is the focus of the newly released teaser.

The video starts with Moon Ga-young and Cha Eun-woo’s first drama moment with Moon falling on top of Cha unexpectedly. Cha thinks about what happened afterwards and he wonders, “How is it that we ran into each other there? But why did she pretend not to see me?” In contrast, Moon is fixated on the fact that Cha saw her without makeup and wallows, “This is the end of me…”

Back at school, we see Moon Ga-young’s encounters with Hwang In-yub, who asks her, “Why? Are you interested?” And he grabs her by her backpack, asking, “Are you running away with my helmet to get my attention?” But Moon is preoccupied with trying to speak to Cha Eun-woo. In voice-over, we hear her ask, “I have a request, can you please pretend not to know?” Cha finally looks at her when she leaves a sticky note on his book, with the message: “Thank you for keeping my secret!!” And she give him a thumbs up while mouthing her thank you again.

Cut to Moon Ga-young getting dragged away by her family as her mom yells, “What’s the point in layering on thick makeup to be pretty when the base face is a mess?!” In a quick sequence of shots we see Moon putting on makeup and messing up her eyebrows, getting her face squashed against a window, and Cha Eun-woo holding up a jacket with an imprint of Moon’s face. Text screens intercut the sequence, “Can makeup help with dating too?”

The teaser comes to an end with the main trio standing together outside. Cha Eun-woo asks Hwang In-yub, “Why do you keep lurking around her?” And Hwang responds with a question of his own, “You like Im Joo-kyung, don’t you?”

Directed by PD Kim Sang-hyeob (Extraordinary You) and written by Lee Shi-eun (Top Star Yoo Baek), tvN rom-com True Beauty is currently set to premiere next month on December 9.
