Backstreet Rookie: Chaos Ensues in Convenience Store Mayhem

With the premiere just a few weeks away, new promo has been released for SBS drama Backstreet Rookie (formerly Convenience Store Saet-byul), including new stills and a video teaser.

The rom-com stars Ji Chang-wook (Melting Me Softly) as a dorky store manager who works at a 24-hour convenience store. Although the long hours are tiring, his life is relatively peaceful. But everything becomes topsy-turvy when the peppy and quirky Kim Yoo-jung (Clean With Passion for Now) starts working with him at the store as the new part-timer.

The newly released stills feature Kim Yoo-jung, who was interviewed on why she was drawn to her character in Backstreet Rookie. She explained that her character is very clear about what she likes and doesn’t likes, has a fiery personality, and works hard to improve herself and do her best. Kim Yoo-jung also spoke about how much fun she’s been having while shooting. The role requires a lot of physicality and she enrolled in action school for the first time in her career to help prepare for the scenes.

The teaser features both lead actors and begins with several neon text screens that announce: “Finally,” “June 19 at 10 p.m.,” and “24-hours non-stop / Comedy house / Open.” We get a peek at Kim Yoo-jung and Ji Chang-wook’s fateful first meeting and Kim asks, “I can start working tomorrow, right?” In a sequence of shots, we are shown what transpires afterwards.

A customer throws money on the counter and Kim Yoo-jung tries to get his attention. Cut to Ji Chang-wook bowing apologetically at a police station while an upset Kim sits with her back turned. We hear the phone call Ji received in voice-over, “Jung Saet-byul got into an argument with a customer and she is now at the police station.” In another scene, a police officer reprimands Kim Yoo-jung and Ji Chang-wook at the convenience store, “How could you sell cigarettes to someone underage?” All the while, Kim and Ji look at each other in surprise.

It cuts to a distressed Ji Chang-wook watching Kim Yoo-jung through the convenience store’s glass doors. He thinks, “I should have fired her once and for all. She’s like an exploding bomb.” And we see Ji with Kim as well as two other girls, tipsy with alcohol, and dancing in the streets. Captions appear, questioning their relationship: ” Unforeseable romance?” And the teaser comes to a close with Ji Chang-wook and Kim Yoo-jung getting up excitedly in a hug and the two share a charged moment.

Writing for the drama is Sohn Geun-joo and directing will be helmed by PD Lee Myung-woo (The Fiery Priest).

Airing Fridays and Saturdays on SBS, Backstreet Rookie is currently set to premiere on June 19 following The King: Eternal Monarch.
