Despite my disappointment with the changes in the upcoming drama adaptation of The Beauty Inside, I can’t help but get all fluttery when I see Seo Hyun-jin (Temperature of Love) and Lee Min-ki (Because This Life Is Our First) together onscreen. Maybe if I just think of this as a new romance drama with these two leads rather than an adaptation of one of my favorite films, I’ll be able to enjoy it better?
The new JTBC Monday-Tuesday drama is based on the sensitive, romantic film of the same name about a man who wakes up wearing a different body every day, and the woman who loves him despite his outer appearance. The drama adaptation is described as a romantic comedy and flips the genders, so Seo Hyun-jin will play a woman who changes in appearance, but it’ll only happen to her once a month for a week at a time. She’ll also get to return to her original body after the change each time, which is a significant departure from the film.
The premise is described as “a special romance between a woman who lives with others’ faces for one week every month, and a man who can’t recognize others’ faces for twelve months out of the year.” I have no idea if Lee Min-ki’s recognition problem is metaphorical or literal (what, face blindness is a thing!). I’m also really excited about Seo Hyun-jin’s reunion with PD Song Hyun-wook of Oh Hae-young Again, the drama that shot her career to new heights.
The show released its first teaser, which sums up the premise pretty nicely. Lee Min-ki and Seo Hyun-jin meet on a busy street, and as he approaches her, she shifts into a young girl, a man, and an elderly woman. But he just smiles and continues ahead until he reaches her and says, “It’s okay. I’ll recognize them all,” and gives her a hug. Awwww. I’m in. I knew I would be though—I’m such a sucker for this story!
Beauty Inside will follow Life on Mondays and Tuesdays beginning October 1.
