Song Hye-gyo & Park Bo-gum’s Noona Romance ‘Boyfriend’ Coming to tvN

There are still no confirmations for the cast or network for the upcoming romance drama Boyfriend, but when you have a potential pairing between A-list actress Song Hye-gyo (Descended From the Sun) and dramaland darling Park Bo-gum (Moonlight Drawn By Clouds), you’re bound to generate a lot of buzz. Both actors are coming off of huge hits followed by a long hiatus, so this would be a huge casting coup twice over. Even though I have trouble not thinking of Park Bo-gum as Little Song Joong-ki, which either derails or enhances the romance angle, depending on how you like your suspension of disbelief.

The new drama is potentially looking at a Wednesday-Thursday time slot on tvN’s winter schedule, though the network was careful to say that it hasn’t been finalized. The project comes from PD Park Shin-woo of the delightful rom-com Jealousy Incarnate, which was directed with visual and stylistic wit and a flair for comedic timing—a distinct style that I won’t be forgetting anytime soon. I’m less excited about the writer, Yoo Young-ah, whose credits include Entertainer and Pretty Man, which both fall into the cute but disappointing category.

The romance drama will be about a love between a woman who appears to have everything and a man who appears to have nothing. Song Hye-gyo is up for the role of an assemblyman’s daughter who was forced to marry a chaebol by her parents, but later ends up divorced after having a child. Park Bo-gum has been offered the part of an ordinary man, and though nothing has been explicitly stated about his character’s age in the drama, I can’t imagine that they’ll ignore the actors’ twelve-year age gap completely.

Boyfriend will potentially air Wednesdays and Thursdays beginning in December on tvN.
