New photos have been released featuring the cast of SBS drama Vagabond during their script reading, which took place last June.
Present at the reading were lead actors, Lee Seung-gi (Hwayugi), Suzy (While You Were Sleeping), and Shin Sung-rok (Perfume). Supporting cast members included Moon Jung-hee (Sweet Savage Family), Baek Yoon-shik (Cantabile Tomorrow), Kim Min-jong (Mrs Cop) and Hwang Bora (What’s Wrong With Secretary Kim).
The story of Vagabond sets off after a passenger plane crashes and tragically kills hundreds of passengers. The incident is reported to the public as an accident, due to problems with the plane, but truth of the matter is different from what’s been reported and the government conceals what really happened on the plane. In order to expose the government corruption, one man becomes a “vagabond” and embarks on a dangerous journey to reveal the truth. Having no family, no attachments, and even ridding himself of his name, he has nothing left to lose.
Playing the vagabond is Lee Seung-gi. His character is a stunt double who’s passionate about his job and dreams of becoming an action star like Jackie Chan someday. The only family Lee Seung-gi has left is his beloved little nephew Hoon. When Hoon dies in that fateful plane crash. Lee’s life is torn apart by the tragedy. However, after the purported accident, Lee Seung-gi stumbles across a strange video on his nephew’s cloud account and the contents reveal Hoon in the midst of what seems to be a terrorist attack on the plane, which sets Lee off on a journey for the truth.
Suzy takes on the role of a black-ops agent who feels compelled to seek out the truth and is driven by a desire to follow her conscience. Due to the nature of her job, she’s encountered all sorts of unimaginable crises and situations which have helped her to grow, and she’s adept at thinking outside of the box. She was on a job in Morocco when the plane crash occurred, and was quickly dispatched to help receive the upset family members of the deceased. However, when she meets a crazed Lee Seung-gi shouting about terrorists, she’s faced with making a decision between what’s right versus what is pragmatic.
Shin Sung-rok plays the Investigations Team Lead for the National Intelligence Service (NIS). He’s a serious and highly intelligent workaholic who approaches each case with an impartial eye, trying not to let his emotions get in the way. However, changes in the government leave him feeling uneasy and has noticed the NIS become politicized and shifting with the government. He first encounters Lee Seung-gi’s character after he’s tasked to find the perpetrator behind the plane crash. Initially, he’s put-off by the Don Quixote-like man who seems to just get in the way. Shin eventually starts to develop a certain respect for Lee and two begin to work together to solve what happened.
I’m pretty excited about both the cast and the production team! PD Yoo In-shik (Romantic Doctor Teacher Kim) is in the director’s chair. He previously worked with Lee Seung-gi on You’re All Surrounded and he has a long history with the writing team, married couple Jang Young-chul and Jung Kyung-soon. The three have worked together on several projects, including History of the Salaryman and Giant among others. Although some of their projects were a miss, History of the Salaryman is a long-time favorite of mine.
Filming for Vagabond was completed this past May and they are currently in post-production. The premiere is set for September 20 and the drama will be taking over the Friday-Saturday timeslot on SBS after Doctor John concludes its run.
