I can never get enough of dramas centered around a tight-knit group of female friends, and I’m excited to see director Lee Byung-heon, known for his comedy films like Twenty and the massive hit Extreme Job, take on the premise and give it a fresh spin. JTBC’s Melo Suits Me has released its first teaser, introducing our three main female leads, Chun Woo-hee (Argon), Jeon Yeo-bin (Rescue Me), and Han Ji-eun (100 Days My Prince), as well as Ahn Jae-hong (Fight My Way) and Oh Seung-yoon (An Empress’s Dignity). Gong Myung, who will be reuniting with his Extreme Job director, also has top billing, but doesn’t appear in this clip.
The teaser starts out with the three girlfriends, plus Oh Seung-yoon, all sitting in front of the TV watching a drama, with beers in hand and dressed in PJs. The screen zooms up close to each of the three women, as descriptors appear around their head. Han Ji-eun, who plays a marketing team manager at a drama production company, apparently leads a life “more dramatic than a drama, which is a working mom’s path.” She muses to someone offscreen that it’s better for stories to end when the two people confess their love to each other, “like in dramas.”

The screen switches to Jeon Yeo-bin, whose character is a documentary filmmaker. She may appear to be the most level-headed of the group, but she also sounds like she has a temper, judging by her on-the-spot decision to quit her job at an established documentary production company after her boss makes some inappropriate comments at a company dinner. She drily comments offscreen that “humans are weak, so how strong could human love be?” Her taglines read “A documentary director hit with popularity,” and referencing what she said offscreen, “Though she might say that, the only one in a relationship.”
And last, but not least, is Chun Woo-hee, a drama writer who ironically sounds the most cynical of the bunch when it comes to love. She laments offscreen, “Love, love, love. Everyone’s always obsessed with love. But doesn’t that love sound like it will end in destruction?” She’s called the drama writer who has “sworn off melo,” says love should be left “to the dogs.” The drama-within-a-drama that the girls are watching hilariously ends with a “Thank you for watching this completely predictable melodrama…” and then Ahn Jae-hong, a drama PD, suddenly appears on the screen with an awkward, two-handed wave.
JTBC’s Melo Suits Me will air on Fridays and Saturdays starting on July 26.
