One of the reasons I’m looking forward to Channel A’s upcoming melo Weekday Afternoon Lovers, despite my usual hesitation regarding the genre and adultery content in general, is because of this cast. I feel like each of the four leads, Park Ha-sun (Drinking Solo), Lee Sang-yub (Top Star Yoo Baek), Ye Ji-won (Thirty But Seventeen), and Jo Dong-hyuk (Rude Miss Young-ae), are better known for either their comedic or action roles, so it’ll be interesting to see them take on this genre.
In a newly released teaser for Weekday Afternoon Lovers, we see Park Ha-sun walk down a red corridor as she narrates that “love has flown away.” A shot of her encountering Lee Sang-yub in a park gives way to him opening the door in that red hallway. A caption asks, “Am I looking for love?” as Lee Sang-yub pulls her into the room. Park Ha-sun tells us offscreen that the moment he grabbed her hand was the moment she could truly see herself for the first time. The two run down the red corridor hand in hand as the clip ends with Park Ha-sun says that this feeling has enveloped her “slowly and deeply.”
While I look forward to watching Park Ha-sun and Lee Sang-yub play a tortured couple who embark on an affair, Ye Ji-won and Jo Dong-hyuk’s relationship is something I’m interested to see the drama explore as well. While Park Ha-sun starts out the show as a mild-mannered model housewife who detests the idea of affairs, Ye Ji-won is a pro-adulterer who unexpectedly finds herself falling for a man (who I assume is not her husband). That man is Jo Dong-hyuk, a genius painter who is in the middle of an artistic slump. I’ve only ever watched Jo Dong-hyuk in Bad Guys, so it’ll be interesting to see him in an action-less role like this one.
Weekday Afternoon Lovers will premiere on July 5 on Channel A.
