Stock up on your tissues folks, this one’s going to be a doozy. The upcoming remake of Noh Hee-kyung’s debut drama The Most Beautiful Goodbye in the World has released two heartbreaking teasers that briefly show us the family that has slowly drifted apart coming back together after finding out that their mother and wife, played by Won Mi-kyung (All’s Well With a Happy Home), has been diagnosed with terminal cancer.
The first teaser shows Won Mi-kyung taking care of her ungrateful family members in turn, like waking up a hungover Min-ho (Hwarang), preparing a breakfast that daughter Choi Ji-woo (Woman With a Suitcase) refuses, and feeding her mother-in-law Kim Young-ok (Dear My Friends), who suffers from dementia. She takes it all in stride, as mothers do, but the whole family is in for a shock when they hear that she has late-stage cancer, especially her doctor husband Yoo Dong-geun (What’s With This Family).
I’m already tearing up at the thought of a grief-stricken Yoo Dong-geun, who will have to come to terms with years of his indifference to his wife as her death draws near. As she drives her mother and grandmother, Choi Ji-woo asks tearfully at the end of the teaser, “If you’re not here, Mom, what am I supposed to do?”
The second teaser shows the entire family enjoying a sunny day out on their lawn, making large amounts of kimchi for the winter. It’s a happy moment, with lots of laughter and Won Mi-kyung feeding her son and husband by hand, but it’s undercut by Min-ho narrating, “I was happy to be able to call you mother.” I have a feeling I’m going to be giving my own mom lots of hugs after watching this, and I hope Choi Ji-woo is right when she said Most Beautiful Goodbye will be a “warm drama that helps people treasure their mothers and families.”
The Most Beautiful Goodbye in the World is set to premiere this Saturday, December 9, and will run for 4 episodes in tvN’s weekend slot.
