Yoon Kyun-sang adapts to prison life in Doubtful Victory

I guess today’s a prison kind of day; here we have new stills of Yoon Kyun-sang in his prison uniform for his upcoming SBS drama Doubtful Victory, where he plays a wrongly accused criminal on death row. Somehow, he escapes from prison and ends up becoming a fake police detective, which kicks off our main plot. The premise may sound serious, but the drama’s teaser displayed a wry sense of humor, so I’m looking forward to Yoon Kyun-sang flexing his comedic muscles.

The premise will also allow Yoon to take on several different personas as he reinvents himself in his new life. In these stills, we see him before the big jailbreak, a decade into his sentence, passing the time idly with his fellow cellmates. Yoon described the appeal of his character as being a growth story as he heads into a new life, having been wrongfully accused at a young age and spending his youth incarcerated. He happens upon the opportunity to take on the new identity of a (fake) detective, and as he works cases, he grows into a true detective.

Jung Hye-sung (Manhole), meanwhile, plays a competent and determined police officer whose strongheaded ways clash with the teamwork-centric nature required within detective units. Unsurprisingly, that has alienated her from her teammates.

The news about this show has thus far been tight-lipped about the circumstances that lead to the hero’s escape, only saying repeatedly that he “somehow” becomes a detective. I’m guessing they’ve got a few plot tricks up their sleeves and are saving the big reveal for the show, which I can get behind. (I always get so bummed when the big twist is revealed before the show airs, and we have to wait several weeks for the show to even get there. I can live with some suspense!)

Doubtful Victory will take the Monday-Tuesday slot after Temperature of Love wraps, and premieres on November 27.
