I love these two already. We’ve got character teasers out for each of our leads in upcoming courtroom drama Nothing to Lose, and I can tell Park Eun-bin (Age of Youth 2) and Yeon Woo-jin (Seven Day Queen) are going to make the oddest, most adorable couple of judges. I was a little worried that Nothing to Lose was going to go with a heavier tone, like the vast majority of legal dramas tend to do, but the teasers seem to suggest a lighter vibe, and I’m looking forward to watching the two leads bicker their way into an opposites-attract romance.
The two teasers take on slightly different formats, and Park Eun-bin’s has her addressing the audience directly. She will be playing Lee Jung-joo, a 28-year-old judge in the Seoul District Court with an anger management problem, which you can see as she launches into a tirade about how all the legal dramas and films these days are only about prosecutors and defense lawyers, citing works like A Violent Prosecutor and The Attorney. I love how she goes from smiling to a full-on rant in the space of one hair-flip, saying, “Now we even have neighborhood lawyers on TV!”
Her arguments hilariously devolve into pettiness, grumbling about how prosecutors are always shown to be good at fighting (“I’m pretty good at fighting, too!”), culminating with, “And I did better in school than all of them!” She gathers herself, though, and relays to the audience with a smile that all cases end with a judge. The camera pans out to reveal a kid sitting next to her on the bench, and Park Eun-bin turns to ask what his dream is. Cue awkward pause as the kid says, “A prosecutor.” Lol. To add insult to injury, she begins to ask whether he’s never considered becoming a judge, and he responds with a negative even before she’s finished her question.
In contrast, we see Yeon Woo-jin’s excessively rational character, Sa Eui-hyun, quarreling with Haeryung (Star of the Universe). If this teaser is anything to go by, the 32-year-old elite judge is an infuriatingly logical person, spelling out in bullet points exactly why Haeryung is mad at him, when she asks in a rhetorical way. He goes into minute detail as he lays out that she got arrested for getting into a physical altercation, he hasn’t asked how she was, and that his actions make her think he doesn’t care. She incredulously asks why he’s acting this way if he knows, to which he says that he has to listen to both sides of the story, as appropriate of a judge. When Haeryung scoffs at his occupation, he says, “We have to listen to the judge’s side of the story, too.”
I find it funny how Nothing to Lose will follow the very type of legal drama Park Eun-bin was railing about. The judge-centered show will take over While You Were Sleeping on Wednesdays and Thursdays, starting on November 22.
