The Black Knight’s Fateful Encounter: Guarding the Woman

KBS’s new fantasy romance Black Knight has released its first teaser, featuring a picturesque first meeting between leads Kim Rae-won (Doctors) and Shin Se-kyung (Bride of the Water God 2017). It looks like the drama’s foreign location shoots in Slovenia will pay off on the visual front: Lush fall landscapes are a major feature of the first teaser, which makes it feel like a cross between the autumn mood of On the Way to the Airport and the travelogue feel of The Package.

Black Knight will be a supernatural romance that spans two centuries, though, so perhaps it’ll differentiate itself on the fantasy front. It’s still a big mystery just what exactly a black knight is in this world, and whether the centuries-long love story involves immortals, reincarnated souls, or something entirely different. Kim Rae-won stars as the black knight, an entrepreneur who will face a dangerous fate for the woman he loves, and Shin Se-kyung is a woman who remains optimistic despite the hardships in her life.

The teaser opens on Kim Rae-won saying in voiceover, “I must find [her].” As he and Shin Se-kyung move through beautiful scenery just barely missing each other along the way, she says, “I want to leave everything behind—the life that surrounds me.” The copy reads, “A man trying to protect his love. A woman waiting for that love.” When they go ’round and ’round and finally meet each other, she asks who he is and he replies, “Your black knight.”

…Not that we know what that means or anything. But it’s Kim Rae-won, looking Gobliny and strutting through town wearing turtlenecks and fall coats, so my main takeaway from this teaser is: pretty. So, not a deep first impression, but not a particularly bad one either. Based on the first teaser, I’m actually hoping that they go for ardent and sad, which seems fitting for the season.

Black Knight comes from the writer-PD team behind Unkind Women and Equator Man, and it’s scheduled to follow Mad Dog on Wednesdays and Thursdays beginning December 6.
