While You Were Sleeping: Premiere Watch and Recap – Best Korean Drama

Finally, it’s here! SBS’s new supernatural romance While You Were Sleeping premieres at last this Wednesday, after what seems like a year of waiting. Pre-produced dramas definitely know how to try a fan’s patience, don’t they? I can’t wait to see what’s in store in this latest project from one of my favorite drama writers, Park Hye-ryun (of I Hear Your Voice, Dream High, Pinocchio, and more).

While You Were Sleeping

Time slot: Wednesday & Thursday
Broadcaster: SBS
Genre: Supernatural romance
Episode count: 32 (half-hour episodes, 16 hours in total)

Reasons to watch: Writer Park Hye-ryun and leading actor Lee Jong-seok have teamed up for a third drama together, and while I don’t expect any new project of theirs to ever top I Hear Your Voice, if it’s as cute and watchable as Pinocchio, I’ll be a happy camper. This new series will also be a supernatural romance, and so far from the teasers it looks like it’ll have the writer’s usual mix of rom-com and thriller elements, bound together with a supernatural ability, of course. This one will belong to our heroine, played by Suzy, who has dream-premonitions of tragic events in other people’s lives.

I expect a bit of legal-procedural drama to be thrown in as well, since Lee Jong-seok is playing a prosecutor, and he and Suzy will presumably be running around saving people. I’m crossing all fingers and toes for there to be some chemistry between the leads, because I trust the writing to be solid, so it’s up to the actors to sell me on the romance. If we could just get a cross between Suzy in Dream High and Lee Jong-seok in Pinocchio or I Hear Your Voice, I think they have the potential to be adorable. Is that asking for too much, drama gods?
