Oh yay, a third season of Let’s Eat? Put me down for a table of one. This is one series I’m happy to grab endless helpings of, all-you-can-eat buffet style. The comedy about food and single life has turned into a successful franchise for tvN, and now a third season is officially in the works for a broadcast next year, and an offer is out to Yoon Doo-joon to headline once again as the funny foodie who loves to wax poetic about food. But wait… does this mean you’re going to get another new girlfriend?! *grabs collar*
The drama’s in-your-face approach to food takes some getting used to (they literally taunt the viewer with mouth-watering sequences devoted to eating), but the series has always managed to fill its world with quirky, relatable characters and tell small stories with loads of heart. The first season starred Lee Soo-kyung as a woman who loved being newly single but hated eating out alone, and Yoon Doo-joon as her weirdo neighbor who turned out to be a cheeky foodie blogger she followed.
At first I was annoyed when they had Yoon Doo-joon’s character move to a new neighborhood in Season 2 and romance a new girl, but that girl turned out to be Seo Hyun-jin, and it was the role that made me love her. The romance was actually better in the second season, as they went from childhood enemies to bickering friends, and eventually lovers.
The question is, what happens in Season 3? Will they be able to get Yoon Doo-joon and Seo Hyun-jin back, or will our hero move to yet another town and romance yet another neighbor? This is starting to become a rake gag. Part of me wants to see them try, just to see how it would work as a franchise premise. Right now I feel like I would kick him for leaving Seo Hyun-jin and falling for a new girl… but then I said the same thing about him and Lee Soo-kyung once.
Thankfully writer Lee Soo-mi of the first two seasons will be returning for Season 3, so I feel pretty good about continuity. PD Choi Gyu-shik of Season 2 will be returning as well, which concerns me a little more, as he was also the head PD of the Let’s Eat spinoff Drinking Solo—the production where the working conditions were so bad that a rookie PD committed suicide last year. I can only hope that planning this far in advance is a sign of improvement.
Let’s Eat 3 is being planned for a broadcast sometime in 2018, and the time slot is yet to be determined. All of my fingers and toes are crossed for Yoon Doo-joon to return, and for Seo Hyun-jin to join him so that his character could stop being a commitment-phobe who flies the coop after every breakup.
