In comparison to the bubbly romantic teasers we’ve had from Bride of the Water God 2017, this poster is a little darker-lit and more melancholic-feeling, featuring Nam Joo-hyuk (Weightlifting Fairy Kim Bok-ju) and Shin Se-kyung (Six Flying Dragons). This tvN drama about the god of water, Ha-baek, played by Nam Joo-hyuk, and his sensible earthly servant, So-ah, played by Shin Se-kyung, is kicking off in less than two weeks!
Nam Joo-hyuk is the water god who descends to earth, which is already inhabited by two of his buddy-acquaintance deities played by Krystal (She’s So Lovable) and Gong Myung (Drinking Solo). Krystal harbors a one-sided infatuation with Ha-baek, while Gong Myung has a crush on her so there’s a bit of a rivalry element there. But Ha-baek’s affections will be directed toward bride So-ah, and the poster’s copy reads: “I’ve been looking for you for ages. My god, my servant.”
So-ah is a female doctor from a family that has served the water god for generations, but she doesn’t believe in any of it until he really shows up at her doorstep. But even after he’s spent all that time searching for her, there are love triangle difficulties ahead because she also becomes involved with another mortal man, played by Im Joo-hwan (Oh My Ghostess). His character is a self-made entrepreneur who is the descendant of a god.
He and So-ah will be bickering enemies at first; it’s a relationship filled with misunderstandings and distrust that slowly turns into curiosity and potential romantic interest. Two more still cuts of Shin Se-kyung and Im Joo-hwan have been released of each looking intensely at the other with dissatisfaction and and tension. I find this an interesting departure from the familiar setup where the secondary lead is mostly helpful and nice to the heroine (and later gets friend-zoned).
Well, here’s to hoping there won’t be too much pain in the water god’s future! Manhwa-spinoff fantasy rom-com Bride of the Water God 2017 will begin airing on July 3 as a Monday-Tuesday drama.
