Woman of Dignity: A Pool of Blood and Tears of Regret

The upcoming JTBC drama about the scandalous lives of the wealthy, Woman of Dignity, has released two new teasers. They give us a better idea of how the social reversal happens between two women who are in opposite stations in life: chaebol daughter-in-law Woo Ah-jin, played by Kim Hee-sun (Angry Mom), and Park Bok-ja, the woman who desperately wants to become like her, played by Kim Sun-ah (Masked Prosecutor).

The teaser below begins with the elderly chaebol tenderly calling for Park Bok-ja, and she looks toward him while her voiceover says: “I wanted to live as her [Woo Ah-jin], not Park Bok-ja.” Then we see the beginning stages of their relationship as Park Bok-ja begs for a job in Woo Ah-jin’s household. But as soon as she becomes a caretaker for the chaebol father-in-law, she begins exerting subtle power as the old man continues to rely on her as a source of support.

Eventually some of the old man’s children have enough of this blatant gold-digging, and one woman slaps Park Bok-ja across the face, saying that she’s only a servant. One by one, other family members confront her, saying that she’ll never leave with anything from this household, and Woo Ah-jin asks her what she truly wants. A bruised Park Bok-ja replies to her that she wants to become like Woo Ah-jin, but it looks like her desires may not end in a happily-ever-after, as the last scene shows her wearing expensive clothing, but lying in a pool of blood.

The next teaser starts where the last ended, and Park Bok-ja wonders whether she’ll be reborn. A man’s voiceover says that despite the circumstances pointing to Park Bok-ja, he’s sure that she isn’t the culprit. Woo Ah-jin walks down a long hall wearing a glamorous floor-length gown, while she thinks: “Everyone dreams of being happy. The journey of life begins with a strong pressure to become happy.”

Then, the scene switches to Park Bok-ja who begins enchanting the old chaebol with flirtatious looks and invitations to dance. When Woo Ah-jin scolds Park Bok-ja, telling her to stay within the boundaries of propriety, in front of her, the caretaker looks repentant. But the next moment has her looking awfully annoyed.

Then for some reason, she comes in through the doors all bloodied and bandaged, but instead of taking into account her injuries, Woo Ah-jin yells at her for not keeping to the boundaries while Park Bok-ja replies that she’ll never leave this house. We go back to the original scene of her lying in a pool of blood with a tear streaming down her face, pondering: “What if I had stopped then?” A woman in sunglasses, who looks to be Woo Ah-jin, is the last person in her thoughts.

Just judging from these teasers, Woman of Dignity looks like a spooky secret story of chaebol abuse and ambition-driven revenge. I’m totally down to see how the relationship between Park Bok-ja and Woo Ah-jin will play out in the end, and who will end up on top.

JTBC Friday-Saturday drama Woman of Dignity begins June 16, following the end of Man to Man.
