Ultimate Forge Crafting Guide: Multipliers, Variants, Traits & Tips

Updated on November 28, 2025: Added additional sections for Runes, Enhancing and how to farm gold/cash/EXP with your crafted gear.

In this The Forge crafting guide, I’ll explain how the entire crafting system works as well as some advanced tips like armor variations (Dark Knight/Samurai) and Ore trait combos. This guide is meant for beginners but non-beginners might also learn something useful. Here’s my complete The Forge crafting guide.

The Forge Crafting Explained

Here’s a run down of how crafting works in The Forge:

  • Weapon Basics: Once you start adding ores and have 3, you can craft Dagger class weapons. The more Ore you add, the more chance you have to craft “larger” class weapons. The number of ores doesn’t increase the stats of the weapon, just the size category. “Larger” weapons tend to have more base damage but less attack speed, while it’s the opposite for “smaller” categories. Check out our Weapon tier list for a full breakdown.
  • Armor Basics: Armor works similarly. Size categories start with Helmet as the smallest, then Leggings, and Chestplate. Moving into the next tier focuses on weight—from Light to Medium to Heavy. Larger and heavier armor grants more Defense/Health, so aim for Heavy if you can.
  • Weapon Variations: Different weapon categories have variations. For example, the Dagger category includes Daggers, Gladius Daggers, and Hooks. If you use 5 ores, you might get an 86% chance for Daggers and a 14% chance for Straight Swords. The game will then roll again to determine the specific variation you’ll receive.
  • Armor Variations: Armor variations operate similar to weapon variations, but special sets like Dark Knight or Samurai can only be crafted on Island 2.
  • Optimal Crafting Chances and Ore Requirements: Below is how much Ore you need for each weapon and armor category.
Item Min Ore Optimal Ore
Dagger 3 3
Straight Sword 4 8
Gauntlet 7 11
Katana 9 15
Great Sword 12 20
Great Axe 16 37
Colossal Sword 21 46
Light Armor 3 3 (For Helmet, more for Leggings/Chest)
Medium Armor 10 (Helmet) 17
Heavy Armor 20 (Helmet) 46

Ore Multipliers Explained

Each Ore has a Multiplier that modifies the base stats of your gear. The higher rarity ore you use, the higher the multiplier. Mixing different ores with different multipliers averages them out. So if you mix some x2 ores and some 1x ones, you’ll end up with a 1.5x multiplier. Better ores mean better stats.

For weapon buffs, the ore with the highest quantity provides all the buffs. If you use 15 common ores and 3 Legendary ones, only the common ore buffs apply. But if you reverse those amounts, the legendary buffs kick in.

Check out all The Forge Ore Stats for details on each ore.

Ore Traits

Some ores have special traits that apply to your weapons/armor when crafted. You need at least 10% of them, quantity-wise, for a trait to apply effectively. For optimal results, aim for around 30%. For example, if crafting armor with the Obsidian Defense trait using 10 ores, use 3 Obsidian for the best effect.

Dark Knight and Samurai Armor Variations

  • the forge dark knight and samurai armor variants
  • the forge dark knight heavy armor variant

There are two Armor variations: Dark Knight Heavy Armor and Samurai Medium Armor. These can only be crafted on Island 2, and don’t appear as options on Island 1. The odds for these special armor options are usually 1/2 instead of the default 1/1 for base variations. Both options provide more Health than the standard armor.

Runes & Enhancements

After forging your gear, you can add Runes which drop from monsters. You’ll do this at the Rune NPC. Our Rune Tier List outlines the best rune effects and which monsters drop which runes. To use a Rune, first Enhance your equipment to boost its stats and add Rune Slots around the 3rd upgrade and more later. Always enhance gear where you’ve used the best Ores to maximize stats.
