Google has surprised tech enthusiasts by launching Android 16 a staggering 16 months ahead of schedule. The stable version for Pixel smartphones became available in the second week of June, while QPR builds featuring experimental updates are currently being tested.
This release, while exciting, has come with mixed emotions. We’ve witnessed an array of new features set to enhance user experience, however, a few standout functionalities are still making their way to us.
However, there’s still plenty to get excited about. I received the stable update promptly on release day after extensive beta testing, and transitioned to the developer channel on my Pixel 9. Here are five standout features that I believe every user should explore, especially those eagerly anticipating Android 16 on their devices:
1. Identity Check

In recent years, Google has significantly improved safety and security features on Android. The latest version introduces Identity Check, which monitors your phone’s location. If it senses your device is in an unfamiliar place, it automatically secures sensitive settings behind biometric locks. So even if someone slightly glimpses your lock screen code, they won’t gain access.
Upon activating Identity Check, you designate several safe locations. Once set, your device will require a biometric unlock for sensitive tasks like changing passwords, accessing Passkeys, or disabling theft protection. This feature works in tandem with built-in anti-theft tools that use motion algorithms to detect theft attempts.
2. Advanced Protection

The theme of Android 16 revolves around security and Google has provided an extensive solution called Advanced Protection. This feature secures your apps, browsing activity, calls, and messages within a protective environment. For your peace of mind, your device will lock itself after 72 hours of inactivity.
Advanced Protection also blocks USB access for data transfers, only allowing charging. Plus, it activates Google Play’s malware detection, ensuring apps from any source are safely scrutinized. Enhanced safeguards in the Messages and Phone apps further protect you from unsafe links and spam.
3. Notification Cooldown

The latest update introduces Notification Cooldown, a lifesaver for those overwhelmed by repeated notifications from the same app—think of those family group chats or gaming notifications. Once enabled, your device gradually mutes the volume of consecutive notifications, providing a quieter experience without completely shutting off alerts.
To activate Notification Cooldown, navigate to the Notifications section in Settings. This feature has drastically improved my experience with constantly active apps like Slack or Teams by keeping me informed but reducing the noise.
4. Battery Health Monitoring

Android 16 introduces a dedicated battery health dashboard, reminiscent of iPhones. This feature allows you to check your battery’s charging efficiency, enabling you to implement tips for extending battery life.
You can also activate charging optimization, adaptive charging, and limit the peak capacity to 80% to minimize stress and prolong its lifespan. If the battery health falls below 80%, replacing it becomes essential for optimal performance.
5. Desktop Mode

This version has unveiled a hidden desktop mode, providing a Samsung DeX-like experience when connected to a monitor. Though it’s still developing, the transition to a larger screen resembles ChromeOS with app windowing capabilities and cursor drag resizing.
A simple USB-C connection suffices to explore this feature. While there are some glitches related to screen resolution and keyboard shortcuts, this functionality promises a more productive workspace in the future.
