Late last year, the Israeli soccer team Maccabi Tel Aviv was set to face off against Aston Villa in Birmingham, U.K. Local authorities, relying on an intelligence report from West Midlands police, decided to ban Maccabi Tel Aviv fans, citing a high risk of hooliganism. It seemed like a reasonable, if disappointing, precaution—until the truth came out.
The report’s findings were quickly challenged by government officials. Now, West Midlands police chief constable Craig Guildford has admitted that his team used Microsoft Copilot to create the report—and crucially, failed to check if any of it was real.
The smoking gun? The report mentioned a match between Maccabi Tel Aviv and West Ham that never happened. Copilot simply invented it. On the day of this phantom game, West Ham was actually playing Olympiacos, according to the U.K. Parliament’s Home Affairs Committee.
“On Friday afternoon I became aware that the erroneous result concerning the West Ham v Maccabi Tel Aviv match arose as result of a use of Microsoft Co Pilot,” Guildford confessed in a letter to the Home Affairs Committee, backtracking after weeks of denial.
AI Hallucinations: More Than Just a Glitch
We’ve all seen AI chatbots make mistakes, but this goes beyond a simple error. This incident shows how AI “hallucinations” can have serious, real-world consequences. Consider that major consulting firm Deloitte had to refund the Australian government part of a $260,000 (€240,000) payment after delivering an AI-generated report filled with fake research and court cases. Despite these clear risks, tech giants are pushing AI integration across industries.
Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang declared in October that the U.S. “needs to be the most aggressive in adopting AI technology of any country in the world, bar none.” He wants “every single company, every single student, to use AI.”
Huang even suggested that raising concerns about AI deployment is “hurtful” and “not helpful to society.”
Microsoft, too, is fully on board. They’ve made AI use mandatory for employees and promote Copilot as a workplace productivity tool. The U.S. House of Representatives also uses Copilot.
