Among the many unforgettable moments in Andor’s debut season, one of the most captivating scenes features the passionate manifesto of Karis Nemik, portrayed by Alex Lawther. This powerful message serves as a backdrop for Cassian Andor’s return home and becomes even more poignant when it resurfaces in the series’ second season. The manifesto spreads the Rebellion’s message across the galaxy like wildfire. Surprisingly, Lawther only discovered the impact of his character’s return later, learning just how significant Nemik has become in the Star Wars universe.
Alex Lawther, who also made a memorable appearance as Joe D. Hermit in Alien: Earth, shared his astonishment during a recent Polygon interview. He revealed that he learned about Nemik’s popularity through an email from Andor’s showrunner, Tony Gilroy.
“I had no idea. He wrote this very beautiful email about the resonance of that particular piece of writing,” Lawther mentioned, explaining that Gilroy informed him of Nemik’s brief return in the climactic moments of Andor’s final episode. In a dramatic scene, an archival recording of the manifesto is played just before Major Partagaz, played by Anton Lesser, takes his own life to avoid accountability for the ISB’s failures.
“‘I’m sure you’re aware of how deeply our work together has landed,’” Lawther quoted from Gilroy’s message. “And I was like, ‘Oh, actually, I’m not really that aware of those things.’”
Lawther expressed gratitude for the opportunity to have his performance live on, even though Nemik faced a tragic end. “Because of Tony’s cleverness, I get to sort of live on in a way,” he concluded. “But I wish I hadn’t been killed by that trolley full of credits.”
Know that you’re not alone in wishing for more of Nemik’s presence, Alex.
