All Shift at Midnight Doppelgangers: How to Identify Them

All Shift at Midnight Doppelgangers: How to Identify Them

I froze as a customer handed over a battered license and smiled like nothing was wrong. The barcode didn’t match the face and, five minutes later, a spider skull stared back at me from under the scanner light. I learned to stop trusting good manners that late at night.

People show up sweaty, distracted, and often lying. All Shift at Midnight doppelgangers and how to identify them

I’ve spent hours behind the cash register while Shift at Midnight punished every missed detail — and I’m sharing what actually matters. You can treat this as a checklist or survival manual: either way, you’ll want to remember it when the lights go out.

You want quick wins first. Always check the barcode on IDs and compare skin tone to the photo — the game treats those mismatches as red flags. Question DOB, occupation, and any small detail printed on the card; a false customer will trip on specifics every time. Run passports and driving licenses through the shop computer when someone refuses to hand them over: the NET Database is your best friend here.

How do you spot a doppelganger in Shift at Midnight?

Small differences are the deadliest. A scar on the wrong cheek, a mismatched tattoo, or claiming a job that makes no sense with the clothes they wear — those are the things that give them away. I teach new players to ask three quick, personal questions they can’t fabricate: childhood town, old employer, and a detail visible on the ID. If answers don’t align, treat them as suspect.

The store is a pressure cooker by midnight; stress makes doppelgangers sloppy. Watch posture and idiosyncrasies — some variants are glaringly off, others are surgical. If an ID lacks a barcode or the details scrub clean on the NET Database, you’ve probably stopped a threat, not a regular customer.

If you spare someone, that mercy has a price. The shifts are procedurally generated; a face you let go tonight might return the next day as an entity. Treat every questionable customer as a decision that echoes into the Blood Moon cycle.

Backroom graffiti, broken music boxes, and misplaced planks. Shift at Midnight: Entities guide

I remember a night the Marionette spawned after I ignored a music box. The store felt empty in a way that smelled like wet paper.

Entities can appear at the start of a shift or erupt during the lockup sequence. Some spawn only during hunts or Blood Moons; others appear if a doppelganger was allowed to leave. You can check counter notes and emails before your shift to see what threats the game indicates, but nothing replaces attention while you serve customers.

Entity Description Counter
The Entity A spider entity that sprouts eight legs from its human body and spins webs. Hide and use weapons from the arsenal when it appears.
Shrieking Doll Small entity that crawls on the floor. Kill with traps and melee weapons.
Demented Long-limbed entity that moves incredibly fast if you’re not looking at it. Works like Coil Head in Lethal Company or SCP-173 in SCP: Containment Breach. Keep it in sight to freeze it, then lure it into traps.
Marionette Cloaked figure that floats. Find and rewind the music box on the shop floor before the song finishes for the third time; otherwise, the Marionette will spawn.
The Dentist Looks like the corpse that spawns in the break room. Loves to stalk the forest and bus at the end of a shift. Run, don’t use open mic, and don’t look back until the entity gives up.
Camoflage This entity camouflages as the wall in the stockroom. Shoot or whack the entity to get rid of him. You will be jumpscared, but won’t lose any health.

What happens if you let a doppelganger leave?

Let one go and you’re inviting trouble. A spared doppelganger can return as an entity, and entities grow stronger if you repeat that mistake. I’ve seen a simple mistake — mismatched ID ignored — turn into a night where three monsters spawn at once. The cost is immediate and future nights get worse.

During lockup you’ll get 60 seconds to barricade, place traps at doors, and arm yourself at the EMERGENCY WEAPONS ARSENAL — which you can access if you purchased weapons on the shop computer earlier. Firearms do damage, but melee and traps are often more efficient early on. Remember: noise and visibility track you. The patience bar is not just a meter; your patience bar is a ticking bomb.

How do you survive a Blood Moon?

Blood Moon guarantees entities will spawn outside after the shift. That means every trip beyond the door risks an encounter. Read on-screen instructions when an entity appears — each one has specific behavior and a unique counter-play. If you see the message to hide, you hide; if it tells you to run, you run and don’t look back.

Hide in vents and behind shelves but don’t overstay: a mass of innards will force you out. When the Weapon Arsenal becomes available, heavier ordnance can be bought via the shop computer; think of each purchase as insurance against multiple spawns. Shift at Midnight is on Steam for $14.99 (€15) if you want to practice in Endless Mode and test counters.

When you miss a doppelganger, that night becomes a classroom. You’ll learn quickly whether your strategy works — or whether the store will chew you up and send you back the next shift to try again. The choice you make over a single ID echoes through every Blood Moon after it. Are you going to let one walk and see what comes for you?
