Marvel's Avengers Brace for Armageddon: Chip Zdarsky's Game-Changer

As we look ahead to 2026, Marvel Comics is generating excitement for a significant event featuring the Avengers—an event called Armageddon. This upcoming saga is touted to be as monumental as Avengers: Disassembled, with writer Chip Zdarsky at the helm. One intriguing aspect is the involvement of the Origin Boxes from the soon-to-conclude Ultimate Universe, which have created notable characters such as Spider-Man and Luke Cage. Recently, in Ultimate Spider-Man: Incursion, Miles Morales has brought several of these heroes into the mainstream universe—leading to potential chaos.

Furthermore, Armageddon is set to expand on narrative threads introduced in Zdarsky and Valerio Schiti’s ongoing Captain America series. With the sixth issue, the storyline will transition to the present, moving away from a variety of super-soldier Captains. Instead, Nick Fury Jr. and his streamlined S.H.I.E.L.D. team return to the spotlight. Though this new version comprises just a handful of agents, they are tasked with retrieving a stockpile of Latverian weapons after the events of One World After Doom, positioning them against Captain America. You can see the character designs and cover illustrations below.

Addressing this narrative shift, Zdarsky mentioned that he initially had another direction planned for the book’s additional characters. However, the opportunity to reintroduce S.H.I.E.L.D. quickly changed the trajectory. “Bringing them back with a new mandate and scope is seriously exciting—they’re starting small, but they, along with Fury, have big aspirations,” he stated.

In the lead-up to Armageddon, Zdarsky will present at least one more storyline, titled Wolverine: Weapons of Armageddon. Illustrated by Luca Maresca, this four-issue miniseries will find Wolverine battling the revived Weapon X program, now helmed by a new corporate entity, PrimeWarrior. Zdarsky emphasized the miniseries as vital to understanding Armageddon, stating that Wolverine will effectively “kick off the end of everything.”

Mark your calendars! The “Road to Armageddon” kicks off with Captain America #6 on January 21, 2026, followed by Wolverine: Weapons of Armageddon #1 on February 18. The full-fledged Avengers: Armageddon saga will begin that summer.
