The countdown was a heartbeat under my palm as I watched the update timer tick toward May 5. I could hear my squad muttering in voice chat, boots scrabbling over digital floorboards. You can feel the game shifting beneath your feet.
I refreshed Steam at the last minute and saw the timer climb — release date and time
I’ll be blunt: Kinetic Games hasn’t posted an exact minute. What they did announce is the firm date — May 5 — and their past cadence makes the likely start time predictable.
The community consensus and past rollouts point to an expected launch near 7am CT / 1pm UTC. That’s where I’d set your alarm if you want to be in-game the second avatars become playable.

When does the Phasmophobia player character update release?
Short answer: May 5 for all platforms. Long answer: Kinetic Games usually drops updates without a set minute, so expect a morning CT launch. I’ll be watching Steam, the official Phasmophobia Discord, and Kinetic’s Twitter for any minute-by-minute updates.

I opened the model gallery and paused — what’s new in the player character update
This update rewrites the way your hunter looks and moves. The base avatars have been rebuilt with new animations, names, and bits of lore. The new models are a lens that sharpens the game’s scares.
You’ll get far more customization than before: hair, facial details, glasses and accessories, layered clothing (innerwear, outerwear), and a wide cosmetics catalog. Everything is earned through gameplay: cash from contracts, challenge unlocks, or Twitch Drops — there are no microtransactions.

How do I get cosmetics in Phasmophobia?
Cosmetics are available three ways: spend in-game cash earned on contracts, finish gameplay challenges, or obtain them through Twitch Drops tied to events. If you participated in the Cursed Hollow 2026 event and hit the first personal goal, you’ll receive three items at launch: a necklace, a t-shirt, and a Forest Spirit Mask.
The devs explicitly said there are no paid skins — everything comes from play. If you follow Kinetic Games on Twitter or join the official Discord, you’ll see drop windows and event announcements first; Twitch and Steam remain the primary platforms for distribution and updates.
Corey Dixon, Kinetic’s Art Director, told Moyens I/O that player customization opens future possibilities and that animations — from death to revives and EMF interaction — were reworked to match the new models. Expect movement to feel more natural and scares to land differently than before.

There’s more on the roadmap too: expect crossovers (Alan Wake), and the push toward the 1.0 release previously called Horror 2.0. Steam threads, Kinetic’s blog posts, and Moyens I/O coverage are the best places to watch for patch notes and hotfixes post-launch.
If you want to be ready at the bell, I’d queue up Steam, keep Twitch open for Drops, and have your friends in Discord — are you going to change your avatar the second the update lands?
